Angela Southall, Director and Co-Founder of Health and Safety Consultancy Southalls, the company that provides the BMF Safety Plus service, explains how cloud based softwar e can help your business meet the H&S task

FINDING THE RIGHT safety support can be just as tricky for a fast growing multi-branch business as for a single site operation. Via its relationship with Health and Safety Consultancy, Southalls, the BMF’s Safety Plus service can support merchants of any size.

At the heart of the service is Southalls’ Safety Cloud software, which will help any business to identify and reduce risk, stay

The Lawsons Group, a 17 site independent timber, building and fencing supplier covering London and the South East, employs an internal health and safety manager. Ten years ago they realised they needed to move away from an unwieldy paper based system to streamline heath and safety management. Paul Sexton, Lawsons’

managing director, says: “As the company expanded we found we were struggling to keep track of health and safety and maintain a consistent approach to legal compliance across our branches.”

Matters came to a head following a serious incident at the company’s Camden branch. A yard man was run over by a fork lift truck which broke both of his legs. Following presecution, the Lawsons’ team took action to improve their health and safety management.

They needed a fail-safe system that would enable them to:

• Unify the branches so they 10

were all legally complaint and working to the same policies, risk assessments, auditing systems and training etc.

• Record accidents with accompanying

documentation in one place, ensuring the information is readily available in the unfortunate event of a civil claim.

• Make branch managers proactive, taking ownership of health and safety at their depot.

• Ensure updates are instantly visible company wide, assisting the internal health and safety manager and saving administrative time.

• Generate company-wide KPI and trend analysis, to understand which branches were performing the best. • Hold multiple staff data securely.

Safety Cloud, which uses 128-bit security encryption, allows individuals to access and input data from their desktop, laptop or smart phone. The software is scalable across multiple branches, and includes a transport management module linked to DVLA license checking software to aid merchants with large       manage.

Lawsons have no doubt

that the system is working for them on a number of levels, as Paul Sexton explained:

“Our branch managers have found it simple and

easy to use. They particularly like the way the system generates e-mail reminders for maintenance jobs and staff training issues - this is proving to be invaluable. “The system was also endorsed on a recent visit from the local authority health and safety

Single site answer Safety Cloud is equally effective for single site merchants, like Chandlers Materials Supplies, a family run business in Chelmsford. One of the company directors is responsible for H&S

matters. They do not have an internal H&S team, but have used Southall’s services for  

Chandlers had key criteria for the safety software:

• Simple and intuitive to use - so staff were not required to take time out for extensive training.

• Provide reminders when work equipment,

maintenance or staff training is due.
