DESIGN DIVERSITY WINS OUT AT HOUSE OF THE YEAR
Channel 4 TV’s flagship architectural programme Grand Designs featured the RIBA’s prestigious House of the Year Award and highlighted just how diverse and versatile the building materials that merchants sell can be.
Forterra and jury member for the RIBA House of the Year Award 2018, said, “All the houses on the shortlist were wonderful examples of how various top quality building products and materials can help inform a grand design. “I was struck by how many designers took risks with different methods, from the architects of the Makers House using long, flat special bricks for their internal walls, to the creators of VEX pouring concrete into onsite moulds to create its unique curved shape. builders merchants can reflect this trend for diversification by offering a wide range of products.
Stunning diversity
“These days, planners and builders have unparalleled choice in the products they can select, whether they’re designing a new build development, planning an extension or undertaking a reconstruction project. Forterra’s range of bricks, blocks, paving, ridge tiles, chimney pots, precast units and other vital components is the broadest and most exhaustive in the trade.”
T
he 2018 RIBA House of the Year Award was sponsored for the first time by building products giant Forterra. The initial list of entries was narrowed down to a shortlist of seven houses, each one demonstrating different styles of construction as part of their impressive designs.
From the striking Red House, built with deep red bricks that demand attention, to the modern VEX House, made from concrete to stand three stories high on a terraced street, to the final winner, Lochside House, situated in the Scottish Highlands and constructed from stone and timber, all the shortlisted homes used building products and materials to great effect.
The sheer variety of different homes on display over the course of the show was a reminder of the many different building processes available to architects, specifiers and builders, and was doubtless an inspiration to the millions of viewers who tuned in, many of whom will be thinking about how best to create their own dream home.
