MERCHANT FOCUS: MKM BUILDING SUPPLIES

RACKING UP

KM Building Supplies, now the UK’s largest independent Builders Merchant, was started in 1995 by entrepreneurs Peter

Murray and current Executive Chairman, David Kilburn, from a small yard in Clough Road Hull. MKM’s rise to prominence represents a true Hull success story and now supports a 53 branch network across the UK, growing at a rate of 10-15 new branches a year. As with many such stories, the ripple effects are felt by other businesses in associated sectors. One of those which has benefited more than most is Filplastic UK, also based in the East Riding of Yorkshire.

The company has provided a range of products and services to each of MKM’s 53 branches, from design and fit-out solutions to ongoing maintenance of racking and shelving. Paul Taylor, managing director of Filplastic, recalls how he first became acquainted with the well-known builders’ merchant. “I got a phone call out of the blue from Pete Murray,” he said.

“He asked if I would go down to see them and quote for shop shelving for a new business they were setting up. When I arrived, I found David Kilburn was there too, who I already

knew from his time in Scarborough. “We were invited to design a layout and quote for their new premises in Stoneferry Road and were lucky enough to secure the order. We’ve not looked back since then. We have supplied equipment for either the yard, warehouse or showroom for every branch since and I feel honoured to be part of MKM’s growth.”

In 2006, MKM appointed Glyn Stroud as new branch development director. Since then, he has overseen the opening of around 30 new branches as far apart as Deal in South East, Honiton in the South West and Perth in Scotland.

When deciding on where to position a new branch, Stroud has a set approach. “We find a site, have a look to see how it will work, then we talk to our cad specialist,” he said.

“I sit down with him and between us we come up with a design for the new branch.” From there he goes out to competitive tender and Filplastic is always among the first companies invited to quote.

“We’re always keen to speak to Paul and his team,” Stroud said.

is customer service. They always give great service, from the people in the office through to Paul at the top. Sometimes problems do occur – it is inevitable with projects of this size – but they do most things right and will always strive to sort things quickly and efficiently on the rare occasion something goes wrong.”
