COOL TECH ON HOT WHEELS

For the first time in its 60 year history, Comley Demolition has chosen two Renault 32 tonne Range C440 8x4s, fitted with Boughton Engineering Hookloader lifting gear, as the most recent additions to its fleet. These are specified to ADR Cat 9 and FORS compliant with 4 camera DVR, turn left warning, strobe lights, beacon bar and BBS reverse alarms. Noting the Rance C’s durability and a customer centric- package from local dealer Renault Trucks South, Managing Director Toby Comley says: “Rob Coxon at Renault Trucks South has a strong customer focus and was meticulous in getting under the skin of our business to understand what we needed. He put together a great deal so we were confident we were getting robust, well built and reliable trucks.”
The Range C’s high ground clearance was a standout feature for Comely Demolition, providing exceptional mobility and access to all types of terrain. Comely continues, “Our trucks get a hard life but we are confident the C440 is up to the job. It’s robust and has higher ride height avoiding damage on our most challenging assignments.” To maximise driver acceptance, the new Range Cs are specified with comfort in mind including 4-point cab air suspension, one-touch electric windows, electronically regulated air conditioning and ultimate leather steering wheel with cruise and telephone control. The trucks have also been designed to make the driver’s life easier with the driving position accessed by four steps, with the first one flexible to reduce damage and step lighting to ensure safety on the job.
As the focus on sustainability and safety in the construction industry gets sharper, merchants and suppliers have been making changes to the way they are getting their products around the UK. Advances in vehicle technology and a worldwide awakening to less environmentally damaging forms of transportation re behind some of the changes beong made as Elizabeth Jordan finds out.
“Introducing a new brand into the fleet, especially one we haven’t tried before, can be challenging but the drivers have given the Range Cs a big thumbs-up so far and have encountered no problems with them. Fuel economy is good too.” Comley concludes. British Gypsum says that safety, health and wellbeing are at the core of its business and in line with this, in partnership with their FORS Gold logistics provider CEVA, they have introduced a high-specification vehicle with best in industry safety features and efficiency to their fleet.
The 85 custom specified Volvo vehicles include a number of enhanced features allowing British Gypsum to transport its products around the country in the safest vehicle available. A lower vehicle ride height for reducing blind spots for example, increases a driver’s direct vision to reduce risks to vulnerable road users and other motorists. In order to achieve this, the new fleet is built on an extra low chassis with low profile tyres and full air suspension allowing for a lower window line and chassis for driver access and egress.

handbrake, leading edge camera systems and a device to support the driver in making a safe trailer couple. The new fleet also feature anti-spill fuel tanks, an electronic braking system with a stability control, an adaptive cruise control with advanced emergency braking and a driver alert system to detect and warn of driving behaviours.
“As a business we always put safety first,” says Brian Fisher, distribution manager for British Gypsum, “This includes outside our factory gates keeping our drivers and the communities in which they operate, safe. We want to be the safest road transport network in the UK and the specification of these vehicles and the enhanced training our drivers receive will help us to achieve that vision.” CEVA Logistics managing director UK, Ireland and Nordics, Eddie Aston, says “We have a very close working relationship with British Gypsum where we share the same goals and ideals for the safety of the equipment we operate. These new Volvo trucks enable us to deliver the best possible service to our customer’s supply chain while operating to the highest safety standards and delivering on the customer’s sustainable transport requirements.”
