BMF Membership reaches 37- year high


Membership of the Builders Merchants Federation (BMF) grew by 12% in the past 12 months to reach a 37-year high. Total membership stood at 850, a figure last achieved in 1985, with the highest number of merchant members (444) since 1994.


Slark steps down from Grafton role


Gavin Slark stepped down as CEO at Grafton Group after 11 years in the role. Gavin Slark said: “It has been a privilege to have been CEO of Grafton over the past eleven years. I have had the opportunity to work with exceptional people and I am very proud of what we have achieved on behalf of all our stakeholders. I have made the decision to leave with a heavy heart but am confident that this is the right time for a new CEO to lead the business as Grafton embarks on its next phase of growth and development. I remain very committed to the leadership of the business over the next six months and to working towards a smooth transition to my successor.”


Beesley and Fildes invests £3m in north west branches Beesley & Fildes invested £3m in expanding and upgrading its facilities to meet growing demand for building products across its 11 north west branches in Huyton, Liverpool, Merseyside, Cheshire and Greater Manchester and online. The family-owned independent builder’s merchant ploughed £1m into its timber milling facility and invested a further £2m in the development of a new distribution centre, both located in Widnes. The 4.2 acre distribution centre enabled Beesley & Fildes to purchase more stock to meet demand, including civils and drainage products.


AUGUST Travis Perkins sales rise for half-year


Travis Perkins reported a good first half performance which saw sales rise 10.3% to £2.53bn, driven by operational and strategic delivery. The merchanting division, with a rise in revenue of 13.3% to £2.15bn, and adjusted operating profit growth of 9.0% , was ahead of the general market, although a slow-down in sales at Toolstation was attributed to reduced DIY sales post-pandemic.

Saint-Gobain puts Jewson on the market


Builders merchant Jewson was put up for sale by its parent company Saint-Gobain, the Paris-listed global conglomerate. JP Morgan was tasked with looking into the possibility of hiving off the merchant business. The 400 branch builders merchant was acquired by Saint-Gobain in 2000, when it bought Meyer International. The merchant employs around 6,000 people and was founded in 1836.


MKM signs up to CO2nstruct Zero initiative


MKM pledged its support to the Construction Leadership Council’s CO2nstruct Zero initiative as a Business Champion. CO2nstruct Zero brings together businesses from across and beyond the construction sector to deliver the change needed to reduce carbon use in construction. Becoming a CO2nstruct Zero Business Champion was the latest in a series of commitments made by MKM to promote sustainable or carbon-neutral practices. The business also invested in its first delivery vehicles powered by compressed natural gas in several of its branches nationwide, as well as piloted EV charging points across its network.

Tears and cheers at the BMJ Industry Awards 2022 The winners and runners-up in the 2022 BMJ Industry Awards were announced at the Awards Lunch in London on Friday September 9th. Being held less than 24 hours after the announcement of the death of HM Queen Elizabeth ll, the event was tinged with sadness as well as celebration. A minute’s silence was held to remember Her Majesty, and BMJ Group Managing Editor Fiona Russell-Horne lead a toast to her memory and one to the new King.
