Game, set and match for Bromsgrove sporting star

A Bromsgrove schoolgirl’s dream to play powerchair football in the top-flight is now within reach, with support from members of the BMF and one of Britain’s leading children’s charities. For the last two years, Summer Rice has been playing the sport, but the equipment she used was limiting her potential. She has cerebral palsy and needed a performance powerchair to enable her to really get to grips with the game.

Now Summer is gearing up for the next season, after the BMF teamed up with Variety, the Children’s Charity - who provide specialist equipment to disabled

children - to donate a powerchair, with money raised by its members. The new chair will enable Summer to train at West Bromwich Albion - which hosts powerchair football with The Albion Foundation - and play with older teens and adults. Summer, a pupil at Chadsgrove School in Bromsgrove, said: “Having the new powerchair means I can play at a higher level. My game will improve by being able to use the same chair all of the time, instead of a different one every week.”

Summer was presented with her new powerchair at West Bromwich Albion Community Sports Hall by the BMF’s CEO, John Newcomb.

Chandlers make it three in a row at BMF Mastermerchant

In a thrilling weekend of sport, England emerged victorious in the Cricket World Cup, Lewis Hamilton took the chequered flag at Silverstone, Novak Djokovic won an epic final at Wimbledon, and Chandler Building Supplies won the BMF Mastermerchant Trophy for the third year running.

Chandlers made just one change to last year’s winning line-up, with Mike Hindle joining Trevor Mudd, Kayleigh Sinclair and Sean Sinclair to form their “Merchants of Menace” team. They faced tough competition from the 14 teams taking part, including first time entrants, Hafele, who won the

The fun event is designed to help colleagues learn more about each other’s strengths and skills and what can be accomplished through teamwork. BMF CEO John Newcomb said: “This fantastic teambuilding event has been taking place since the 1980s and I’m delighted that so many teams from merchant and supplier members continue to take part. It’s a great way for people to get to know each other better and work together as a team and I would like to thank Stephen Lee Associates, the company who devise the challenges and Builders Merchants News for sponsoring Mastermerchant this year, and even entering their own team to gain the full experience of the event.”
