£3 million US boom for UK drink holder

With people being confined to their homes during lockdown, a British product innovation start- up has

experienced a boom in online sales to the US and is set to turn over £3 million in US sales over the next five years. Hit Products is the business behind CouchCoaster, a patented drink holder designed to rest a drink securely on the arm of a couch or sofa, and TableCoaster, an anti-spill drink holder for flat surfaces. Footfall in retail drops, as schools return

Latest data from retail experts Springboard reveals that footfall across UK retail destinations declined by -6.3% last week from the week before. As the final wave of schools started their autumn term, UK retail destinations saw the first week on week decline in footfall since the end of April. This has led to the annual decline worsening to - 27.5% from -25% in the week before. In high streets and retail parks there were week on week declines of -5.4% and - 5.2% respectively, whilst in

shopping centres footfall dropped by -9%. Footfall in high streets is now 33.7% lower than last year, and 31.2% lower in shopping centres. Despite a drop in footfall in retail parks of -5.2% from the week before, the drop in footfall from the year before is just a third of that in high streets and shopping centres at -10.4%.

The impact of the start of the school term and consequent tailing off of staycations was evident in the greater drop in footfall in towns that appeal to holiday

makers. Footfall in coastal towns and historic towns dropped by more than in high streets generally (by -9.8% in coastal towns and by -7.7% in historic towns). However, this didn’t mean that people returned to their offices, as there was also a proportionately greater decline in footfall in regional cities of - 7.9%, although footfall in Central London dropped by just -3%, offering a glimmer of hope. Footfall declined in every

part of the UK from the week before.

TableCoaster accelerated during lockdown with more people watching Netflix on their sofas and homeworking at their dining tables. Combined sales for the products to the US between March and June 2020 were up 33% compared to the same period last year.

The business was approached by the

Department for International Trade (DIT) whilst exhibiting at the Spring Fair in 2016 and since then DIT has supported Hit Products with advice and funding.

BHETA joins lobby on future for safety marking in housewares and DIY

The British Home Enhancement Trade Association (BHETA) has leant its weight to a forceful collective of trade associations lobbying Government on the future of the CE safety mark after Brexit. The CE mark itself which is used by suppliers across home enhancement as a signifier of safety approval on electrical products and products powered by lithium batteries, will cease to exist as of December 31 in the event of a no deal Brexit. While the CE mark is due to be replaced by

Their initiatives include making storage boxes out of recycled single use plastics, known as the Wham Upcycled range. These storage boxes perfectly capture the idea of a circular economy where products may come to the end of their useful life, but the materials can be recycled over and over again.

a UKCA safety mark, the criteria for applying the mark is not yet clear, potentially impacting on all housewares and DIY suppliers with electrical or lithium battery powered products. BHETA’s marketing manager, Steve

Richardson explained, “This is an issue for many BHETA members and those impacted first are those who import from overseas where lead times dictate the need for the soonest possible guidance.”
