ECO From Lock & Lock - Turning Waste Plastic into Food Storage

Containers That Last A Lifetime

environment. We’ve all seen the harrowing images of birds on landfill sites, or the many different species of marine life being choked by, or tangled up in discarded plastic, and been incredibly saddened that this has been allowed to happen. However, it is important to realise that not all plastics should be thought of as ‘bad’ per se. The real problem blighting the environment is the proliferation and disposal of single-use plastics: items such as straws, drinks bottles, plastic bags etc that are purchased, used and very quickly discarded, sometimes within minutes. It is these products that end up on our beaches and in our oceans. Obviously things can’t go on this way and,

A

if anything good can be taken from this, it is that the last 12-18 months have seen a real appetite from retailers and consumers alike to do something about the issue. People are changing their attitudes and actively seeking out alternatives to single-use plastics, while retailers are taking steps to reduce or completely remove their dependency on them.

One thing we can all do to help is to steer clear of low quality plastic containers - and instead purchase products that are made to last. As the saying goes: ‘Buy cheap, buy twice!’ Although the truth is, you can end up buying countless cheap imitations (all of which can

end up in the bin in a matter of days or weeks due to breakages, faulty hinges etc) when instead a high quality plastic container can be bought that will last for years. It might not seem like such a big deal but good quality food storage containers can stay with you for years, so the end result is less plastic pollution. As the official UK & Ireland distributor of Lock

& Lock plastic containers, we provide award- winning food storage containers that are incredibly reliable, air and watertight and suitable for use in the microwave, freezer and dishwasher. These are products that families have relied

upon for a generation, products which are rigorously tested to ensure that they can be used day in day out without failure. In fact, so confident are we in their quality and resilience that we offer a lifetime guarantee on all products in our classic range. However, as a large supplier of plastic

products, we know that we can and should do more. We realised that, although our products last a lifetime, we could still become more efficient in terms of our manufacturing processes to get the most out of the raw materials and minimise the amount of waste plastic produced. The process we embarked upon has led to

the creation of the brand new ‘Eco’ range, which is available from October 2018. The ECO range from Lock & Lock is salvaged from 100% food grade waste plastic,

s many of you will be aware, waste plastics are currently one of the single biggest issues facing the

produced in Lock & Lock’s own factories. In the past this material would normally be sold to the producers of single-use plastics, which could eventually end up on landfill or in our oceans. We’re delighted to say that those days are gone! ECO will have the exact same

features/benefits you would come to expect from classic Lock & Lock, with the same quality and longevity. It also features packaging created from 100% recycled paper, ensuring that every bit of the product befits the name. The only real difference is the colour. Due to

the different coloured waste plastics that make up their composition, no two containers will be exactly the same; in fact a container and its lid may be different colours, or have other colours swirling through them. This gives each product a unique identity of its own that will look incredibly striking, whether on the shelves of retailers or in the homes of consumers. We think that people will want to get behind a range that turns waste plastic into food storage that genuinely lasts. With the quality and colour on offer and a great story behind it, retailers can really shout about the positive benefits. When they do this, customers will see them taking genuine steps to tackle what is a hugely important issue. Although it won’t eradicate the problem completely, it is hoped that the creation of the ECO range will stop hundreds of tonnes of plastic polluting the environment in future. In that respect, it’s a win-win for everyone.
