SMALL DOMESTIC APPLIANCES
It is this kind of practical innovation that GreenPan believes will tempt consumers to make room for another appliance.
Stayin’ a-knife
Buying better – and looking after what you already own – is creating opportunities in some less traditional corners of the SDA market. Samuel Stenhem, CEO of Tormek AB, says that even with consumers
keeping a closer eye on spending, there remains an appetite for products offering better performance, craftsmanship and a more professional experience at home. In the kitchen, that includes growing interest in good-quality knives – and, importantly, keeping them sharp rather than replacing them. It is an area Tormek is targeting with its T-1 Kitchen Knife Sharpener. Designed and manufactured in Sweden, the compact machine brings a sharpening method traditionally associated with professional kitchens and workshops onto the domestic worktop.
Users can set the sharpening angle between 8 and 22 degrees per side, while a fine-grained diamond grinding wheel sharpens the blade. A separate honing wheel then removes the burr and polishes the edge, and can also be used between full sharpening sessions to maintain it. Its appearance is deliberately part of the proposition too. Tormek
believes appliances that remain on the worktop are more likely to be used regularly, making design increasingly important alongside performance.
The latest addition plays directly into that idea. The T-1 is now
smart mapping and an auto-empty station. Seasonality is another area retailers shouldn’t overlook. Pizza ovens
have performed well during the warmer weather, while Bluestem believes there is an opportunity for retailers to secure stock earlier ahead of periods of hot or cold weather, when demand can rise quickly. Looking ahead, Igenix is refreshing its Mini Oven collection, with models ranging from 25 to 60 litres. Designed to grill, bake and roast while heating more quickly than a conventional oven, selected models also feature integrated hotplates. A new Igenix heating range is also on the way, while Ariete is expanding its outdoor cooking offer with the De Genaro Electric Pizza Oven, capable of cooking stone-baked pizza in as little as two minutes – indoors or out.

For GreenPan, the next wave of SDA innovation is less about adding technology for the sake of it and more about giving consumers a good reason to use an appliance regularly. Marie Dobbels, Marketing Director Retail at The Cookware Company,
says shoppers are increasingly looking at what a product can deliver over the longer term, rather than simply choosing the lowest price. Performance and durability remain important, but appliances also need to make cooking easier and fit comfortably into kitchens where worktop space is precious.
That thinking can be seen across GreenPan’s latest launches. Its Better Blend Milk Maker taps into interest in homemade and plant-based alternatives, preparing fresh plant-based milk in minutes, alongside smoothies, soups and baby food. An automated self-cleaning function takes care of one of the less appealing jobs afterwards. Elsewhere, the Carb Reducing Rice Cooker uses dedicated technology
to separate excess starch from rice as it cooks, while 10 presets cover foods including quinoa, beans and oats. GreenPan has also looked at simplifying traditional slow cooking, with its Slow Cooker allowing ingredients to be browned directly in the pot before cooking – saving the need to reach for another pan. Perhaps the most playful addition is the Frost Soft Serve & Frozen Drinks Maker. With its own cooling compressor, there’s no need to pre- freeze ingredients or make room in the freezer beforehand. Instead, it can produce soft serve, sorbets, milkshakes and frozen drinks in around 30 minutes.

available in Swedish Red, a new colourway inspired by Sweden’s traditional red cottages. Its warm matte finish is paired with a light birch handle, giving retailers another option for customers who want something a little more distinctive on display. For Mr Stenhem, there is an opportunity here for retailers to sell the
story around maintenance and longevity – helping customers get more from the kitchen tools they have already invested in.
