HOUSEWARES MAGAZINE SUMMER DISPLAY COMPETITION
Runner up: Webbs of Tenterden
Coming in a very close second in this year’s Housewares Magazine Summer Display Competition is Webbs of Tenterden, with a window that certainly brought some colour to the high street. The team at Webbs told us: “We wanted lots of colour in it to brighten up our little section of the high street!” And that’s exactly what they achieved. Packed with colour and plenty of personality, the finished window has a
real feel-good quality to it and makes great use of the space available. The Housewares team said: “This is exactly the sort of window that makes you want to stop and have a
proper look. There’s so much colour and plenty going on, but it all comes together brilliantly. “Retailers have such an important role to play in making our high streets interesting and inviting places to visit, and this is a great example of that. “It’s fun, cheerful and unmistakably summery, you can tell a lot of thought and effort has gone into putting it together. A brilliant display from the team at Webbs and a very well-deserved second place.”
Highly commended: Bakers & Larners of Holt
Celebrating everything that makes a summer in North Norfolk special, Bakers & Larners of Holt earns a highly commended spot with a display that puts its local area firmly at the centre. The retailer said: “Our summer window display celebrates the very best of a Norfolk summer, showcasing a wide selection of products perfect for the season while reflecting the vibrant tourism that North Norfolk enjoys during the summer months. “To create a colourful and engaging backdrop, we incorporated imagery of a local beach and park, captured by a local artist whose work we stock in-store. The display combines seasonal merchandise, encouraging both residents and visitors to discover products inspired by the beauty of our local area.” The Housewares team said: “What impressed us here was how well the team had thought about who would actually be walking past the window. Holt welcomes plenty of visitors over the summer, so bringing North Norfolk into the display was a clever way of making it relevant to both tourists and regular customers. “The use of work by a local artist, whose pieces are also available inside the store, was a
great touch too. It gives people another reason to head through the door and shows how a good window can tell a story about the retailer as well as the products it sells.”
Highly commended: Harts of Stur
Another of this year’s highly commended displays comes from Harts of Stur, which used the launch of the Villeroy & Boch Pura Collection as the inspiration for its summer window. The retailer said: “Our window display was created to launch the Villeroy & Boch Pura Collection, using a bold and striking green and white colour palette to showcase the range. “The fresh, contemporary design was chosen to complement the collection while also taking inspiration from
our surroundings, with the green reflecting the beautiful countryside that surrounds Sturminster Newton. The result is a vibrant, eye-catching display that brings together the character of the collection with a strong sense of place.” The Housewares team said: “The first thing that grabbed us with this window was the colour. Keeping to that
green and white palette gives the whole display a really strong identity and makes the products stand out. “We also thought it was a great example of how you can build an entire window around one collection without making it feel too much like a standard product display. Tying the green back to the countryside around Sturminster Newton gives it that extra bit of personality and makes it feel like a Harts of Stur window, rather than something that could have appeared in any shop. “Clean, confident and very well put together, this one thoroughly deserved its place in our top five.”
Highly commended: Peppercorn
Rounding out our highly commended entries is Peppercorn, with a playful window built around Emma Bridgewater’s Animals and Birds collection. The retailer explained that the display combines the Emma Bridgewater collection with Eva Solo bird feeders and a selection of pieces from McLaggan Smith, bringing different brands together around one simple theme. And while the Peppercorn team admitted that reflections and the position of the window frames make their
displays particularly difficult to photograph, it still managed to impress the Housewares team. The Housewares team said: “We thought this was a really clever way of bringing products from different brands
together and making them feel like they belong in the same window. “Rather than filling the space with lots of unrelated summer products, Peppercorn has taken the animals and
birds theme and run with it. The addition of the Eva Solo bird feeders works particularly well and adds another dimension to the display. “It’s fun, a little bit different and shows that you don’t necessarily need a huge amount of space or an elaborate set-up to create a window with plenty of personality.”
