CaseStudy A

n educational building in Hampshire has improved efficiency and sustainability with the installation of three Hamworthy Modumax mk3 floor standing condensing boilers. The project replaced an ageing steel

shell boiler that had been in service for nearly 30 years, operating at around 80% efficiency. The previous fixed-output system suffered from poor responsiveness,

frequent cycling, high fuel use and rising maintenance costs. With the building operating 24/7, a more adaptive and energy-efficient solution was required, fully integrated with the site’s BMS. Working with ARB Mechanical Engineering and Salvis Group Ltd,

Hamworthy Heating supplied three Modumax mk3 boilers, each comprising three vertically stacked 762kW modules to deliver a combined 2286kW output across nine modules. The modular, stackable design achieves a high output- to-footprint ratio, allowing installation within the existing plantroom while improving modulation and efficiency. The site’s nine Hamworthy Wessex mk2 boilers, installed 10 years earlier,

were retained as secondary support units, with the original shell boiler held in reserve. Flow and return headers from Hamworthy Heating were also supplied to ensure effective hydraulic separation and optimal distribution. The system achieves a seasonal efficiency of up to 95% and an overall 45:1

turndown ratio across the nine modules, enabling precise response to real- time heating demand. This reduces cycling and lowers energy use and carbon emissions.

Individual modules can be taken offline for servicing without disrupting

performance, further minimising downtime. Matthew Kirkpatrick, Salvis Group Ltd, said: “We chose the Modumax for

its excellent turndown ratio and high output relative to its footprint, which is essential in space-constrained plant rooms. We’d recommend it for similar projects.” The project, completed with minimal disruption, provides the building with

a reliable, flexible and future-ready heating system that supports its long- term sustainability strategy.
