Unlocking a future in hydrogen

T

he Government’s new Hydrogen Strategy has been widely welcomed by trade bodies and manufacturers in their drive towards decarbonisation. It is believed the strategy will unlock the UK’s hydrogen future with billions being invested and thousands of jobs being created in a thriving low carbon sector. Much of the focus currently is on the domestic arena with government plans to replace natural gas with hydrogen in as many as three million homes each year. But what happens from now on will be significant for the commercial sector too, where hydrogen will play a role. Industry bodies, such as ICOM, are working with BEIS and IGEM to ensure the commercial and industrial sectors, with all their complexities, are being heard. In the meantime, the commercial heating sector is beginning to emerge from a rocky period during the worst months of lockdown. ICOM is seeing some positives signs, for example a rise in boiler sales in February, but the way ahead is still a little unclear. For more in-depth comment on the Hydrogen Strategy turn to pg 6, and on the state of the boiler industry turn to our Commercial Boiler Supplement on pg 23. Also featured this month are AHUs, energy efficiency and underfloor heating.

Cutting edge heat & vent INNOVATIVE BOILER KEY TO HYDROGEN HOUSE

B axi Heating has

demonstrated its 100% hydrogen boiler to

customers and colleagues in the UK’s first hydrogen house. Two homes in Low Thornley, near Gateshead will show the use of hydrogen-fuelled appliances in a real-world

setting and last month Baxi invited housing providers and colleagues to see its boiler in action. Baxi Heating has pledged to make only products compatible with low carbon energy from 2025, which means that gas boilers will be ‘hydrogen-ready’ and can be easily converted to work with hydrogen. Nick Wilson, commercial and marketing director at Baxi Heating (pictured with the boiler above)

said: “We are developing new technologies that will help customers to heat their homes and businesses without warming the planet.

“While we are not wedded to any one technology, hydrogen represents a great opportunity. It is carbon- free at the point of use and enables families to use their heating and hot water in the same way they do today, without major changes to their central heating systems or homes. What starts today with one house will become a community of houses next year and then we could see hydrogen boilers in millions of homes by the next decade.”

The H100 project aims to convert a community in Fife, Scotland from natural gas to hydrogen next year. The semi-detached properties will demonstrate the use of 100% hydrogen for domestic heating, hot water and cooking.

RADIATORS PERFORM ON A COMMERCIAL SCALE T

he Falkirk Campus of Forth Valley College in Scotland opened in 2020 and incorporated a well-designed heating system to ensure students and staff were comfortable at all times of the year. Key to the heating system was the use of Stelrad radiators throughout the campus – a mix of more than 300 Planar radiators – both horizontal and vertical models – alongside 40 Concord Lo-Line floor-mounted radiators and several of the company’s range of low surface temperature radiators.

“We were delighted to see our radiators specified for inclusion in this prestigious project,” said head of marketing, Chris Harvey. “We have seen our radiators selected for an increasing number of large-scale, education related projects in schools, colleges and universities across the UK in the past couple of years. This building is leading edge and highlights how well our radiators can contribute to comfort in larger commercial properties that require efficient sharing of heat around the premises.
