for example, will need to be responsive to such occupancy changes to ensure comfort conditions are maintained with minimum energy consumption. Ventilation systems may also need

to be reconfigured to recirculate less room air and introduce more fresh air; as recirculating systems have the potential to spread viruses from one area to the rest of the building. However, more fresh air means potentially using more energy to temper higher volumes of air, with implications for the organisation’s energy bills and carbon footprint. There is a strong likelihood that this will encourage organisations to invest in more efficient heating systems – possibly with wider use of low carbon

heat sources – and to ensure existing plant and controls are properly maintained.

Summary

As the lockdowns (hopefully) end and we return to something closer to what we used to think of as normal, the subsequent boost to business and consumer confidence should have a positive knock-on effect for our industry and the wider economy. Doubtless, we need to be alert to the possibility of bumps in the road but it’s now clear that our industry has the agility to respond quickly and decisively in meeting such challenges and overcoming them.

The changes in working practices are significant for our industry because they will drive major changes in building usage, linked to more fluid occupancy patterns, and the services used.
