POLYPIPE REGATTA PARTNERS WITH HELP FOR HEROES
T
he 19th annual Polypipe Regatta, which took place around Port Solent last month, saw over 60 yachts participating in an event which raised funds for
worthwhile causes including armed forces charity Help for Heroes and John Merrick Sailing Trust.
The annual sailing event saw 60 teams participate in an
exhilarating yacht race on the Solent with the team from Upson Consultancy taking the top spot. Another highlight of the event was an auction of a sailing day for six on the yacht Tahlia. This was donated by David Asher of Drakes and the bid raised over £2,000. The partnership between Polypipe and Help for Heroes
reflects the longstanding connection between the British armed forces and the UK construction industry. Every year, more than 14,000 servicemen and women
return to Civvy Street, with one in four forging a new career in construction. Polypipe will be helping veterans to re-enter the work
force upon their return from service. Work experience, vocational experience, and sponsorship through a British Plumbing Employers Council (BPEC) course at the Polypipe Professional Development Centre in Doncaster, will all be available to ex-servicemen and women interested in pursuing a career in plumbing and groundworks. Cameron McLellan, managing director at Polypipe Building Products, said: “With so many Veterans entering
the construction industry, offering support as they rebuild their lives is a cause that remains close to Polypipe’s heart. The company is looking forward to contributing to the vital work of Help for Heroes, with a range of initiatives planned over the course of the three-year programme.” Edward Sharman, senior corporate partnerships manager at Help for Heroes, said: “We’re delighted Polypipe has come on board as a corporate partner to support our wounded, injured and sick servicemen, women and veterans over the next three years. There are fantastic events lined up and we are really looking forward to working with them on this exciting partnership, directly helping to rebuild lives.”

CIBSE has taken the lead in developing support, guidance and specific tools for digital engineers. The most notable recent example was the development, with NG Bailey, of the BIMHawk online tool to automate the transfer of Product Data Templates into BIM platforms. CIBSE president, Peter Y Wong,
commented: “The formation of the Society of Digital Engineering demonstrates the importance of digital technology in the building services sector and the commitment
of CIBSE to develop the art and science of digital engineering.” Les Copeland, commercial director,
Property and Buildings at WSP and chair of CIBSE Digital Steering Group, added: “This is a significant step in CIBSE’s work with industry on digital engineering and is the culmination of many years work by the CIBSE Digital Steering Group. It will provide a home for digital engineers to network, share and create best practice and find sources of information, training and peer groups.”
