industry that constructs amazing buildings; and it has a new generation of engineers eager to pick up the baton and run with it. The President said that young engineers should be allowed to “set the agenda” because they are more naturally collaborative. They were also best placed to spearhead the sector’s attempts to embrace digital technologies, such as the Internet of Things; ‘smart’ controls; 3D printing; and augmented reality, which would be pivotal in improving project delivery. “Our future generation can take those things and make them the norm,” he added. “The world of social media means that they are more open and receptive to working closely with people from other organisations, other professions and from other countries.”
Magnificent
Launching the BESA Future Leaders programme during the event and welcoming many of its first intake as guests, he said the industry had demonstrated its ability to deliver “magnificent projects” when it collaborated properly, but needed “new ideas, fresh thinking and an approach that is suited to today’s 21st Century world”. However, Mr Hopkinson added that the new generation would also require the support and guidance of the experienced professionals still working in the industry. A number of the Association’s past presidents attended the lunch, which he said exemplified the spirit and strength of BESA in being able to harness a wealth of knowledge and experience with youthful enthusiasm and drive. Encouraging young people to
contribute to the industry via the BESA Future Leaders initiative is part of the President’s ambition to improve the flow of young talent into the sector. During his lunch speech, he urged the building engineering sector to champion its role models and boast about its achievements in order to improve its image.

Steph McGovern of BBC Breakfast News “We all have a part to play in raising
the profile of the industry – using great buildings [like the Leadenhall] to explain why our profession is so important; why it makes a difference; and why, therefore, it also represents a great career opportunity for ambitious young people.” He said it was a great industry that was “open to all”, but it was still dealing with the legacy of years of under-investment in skills and training. “My year as President of this great association will be dedicated to empowering the new generation; putting them at the heart of decision making in our sector; and challenging them to set the agenda. “We must listen to them and guide them because, in just a few years, this industry will be theirs and the more efficient, streamlined and successful the industry becomes; the easier it will be to attract the best and the brightest.”
