BUILDINGS PERFORMANCE INSTITUTE EUROPE RELEASES EPBD GUIDE
T
he Buildings Performance Institute Europe (BPIE) has released its guide on the implementation of the amended Energy Performance of Buildings
Directive (EPBD) (2018/844), in which EU member states agreed an objective to minimise CO2
emissions from
buildings by 2050. National governments must now implement regulation and support schemes to achieve their commitment. The BPIE guide supports policy makers to develop and
agree eff ective instruments which will lead to healthy and climate-friendly buildings for all citizens. It includes good practice examples and covers long-term renovation strategies, fi nancing renovation and calculating energy performance as well as energy performance certifi cates and the smart readiness indicator. The amended text of the EPBD was published in the Journal of the European Union on June 19 2018, coming into force on July 9 2018. By March 10 2020, every member state must transpose it into national law. The BPIE report, ‘Future-proof buildings for
all Europeans – A guide to implement the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive’, addresses various
aspects of the Directive, off ering member states a comprehensive tool kit to meet the decarbonisation challenge.
Buildings are responsible for approximately 40% of energy consumption and 36% of CO2
emissions in the EU.
On average, we spend 90% of our time indoors and the quality of the indoor environment aff ects our wellbeing. Two-thirds (65%) of the European building stock was
built before 1980; about 97% of the EU’s buildings must be upgraded to achieve the 2050 decarbonisation goal, but only 0.4-1.2% are renovated each year. A highly effi cient, technically-equipped and smart building stock will be the cornerstone of a decarbonised energy system. Highly effi cient buildings have an important role to play in achieving a climate-neutral European economy, through renewable energy production, control, storage and demand response, as well as green charging stations for electric vehicles. Upgrading building stock to high effi ciency levels is a
precondition to achieving Europe’s climate promise made within the Paris Agreement. Visit

REHAU PREPARES TO HOLD DISTRICT HEATING DEBATE
O
n June 19, polymer pipes specialist Rehau will host a free to attend event on 4th Generation District Heating.
‘4th Generation - The Hot Debate’ will bring together
six expert speakers from across industry to discuss the benefi ts and advantages of 4th Generation heat networks in the UK.
The line-up of speakers at the event will be off ering their opinions on all things district heating in a series of talks and debates throughout the day. The speaker line-up will fi rst give their perspectives in a
short presentation, after which there will be two sessions of interactive debates. Rehau’s own Alexandra Ivanchuk will be leading a talk on the ‘Eff ects of 4th Generation on the CAPEX of a heat network’, closely followed by a debate with other fi ve speakers. Steve Richmond, head of marketing and technical for
Rehau’s Building Solution division, commented: “The importance of district heating has grown in prevalence in recent years, especially following recent government pledges. “Suffi ce to say that the UK district heating industry
is at a key junction in its journey – with Heat Networks Investment Project (HNIP) funding announcements due in 2019 as well.
“As an industry, we therefore need to ensure designers,
installers and developers alike are designing and building effi cient networks. “Rehau has acknowledged the importance of district heating and has, for several years now driven forward best practice in heat network design. “We are incredibly excited to host this event and to
create a platform for the best in the industry to discuss and debate ideas on how we need to operate as we step into the future.” Switzerland-headquartered Rehau, which employs over 18,000 people in more than 170 locations worldwide, has a catalogue of products which support the use of district heating.
Its popular Rauthermex and Rauvitherm PE-Xa
ranges are well-known for their fl exibility and thermal performance, whilst the recently introduced large diameter PP-R range allows for designers to specify a fully polymer network up to 355mm. Rehau’s 4th Generation District Heating event will be taking place on June 19 at The Building Centre in Store Street, London. The event is free to attend but spaces are limited, so
registered soon to avoid disappointment. For further information and to register to attend, visit the Rehau website at
