Protecting our SMEs

he shock event of the year so far is undoubtedly the collapse of Carillion and the knock on effect this might have on SMEs further down the supply chain. A survey of 133 BESA and ECA members has revealed just how serious the situation is. Firms are owed more than £15m for ongoing work and over £10m for work completed of which £3m is held in retention payments. The snap poll was quite revealing, alarmingly so, when

T

you consider the debt owed to engineering services companies. One of these, a small business with less than 10 employees, is owed more than £250,000. Suffice to say BESA and the ECA along with widespread industry support have been on the case. They have met with Secretary of State for BEIS Greg Clark

urging him about the importance of implementing strict payment measures to safeguard their members against retentions. They have also been intricately involved in the introduction to Parliament of ‘the Aldous Bill’. The Bill had its first reading in Parliament in January

backed by MP Peter Aldous, who has subsequently intervened in the wake of Carillion’s collapse to urge ministers to give the Bill a fair hearing in government time. SMEs in debt are less likely to want to create more work and opportunities, so kudos to those industry bodies who are doing everything they can – their efforts are to protect their members and industry as a whole. These issues are covered extensively in this issue of HVR on pages 6, 12 & 13. Also in this issue is a feature with views and case studies on the increasingly commonplace district heating (pg 15), ductwork (pg24), fan coils (pg 26), low carbon buildings (pg 29) and our monthly HVR Domestic supplement (pg 31)

Steam boiler challenges heat transfer principles

‘world-first design that is durable, long-lasting and boasts the highest efficiencies and ultra-low NOx emissions’. By adopting a systems-engineering approach to design and implementing PURE Technology Fulton’s VSRT is said to challenge the heat transfer and mechanical design principles of traditional steam boilers. It is also claimed by the company to be the most

radical change to vertical steam boiler design since Fulton pioneered the vertical tubeless boiler in 1949. Commenting for Fulton, sales and marketing manager Leigh Bryan says: “To meet ever-more stringent industry and environmental standards, our PURE Technology approach looks to enhance heat transfer, provide class-leading efficiencies, improve steam quality and reduce NOx emissions. So rather than improve existing products to achieve these goals, PURE Technology radically challenges conventional boiler design by engineering solutions that are fit-for-purpose and applications.”

With over 15 patents pending in three continents,

the VSRT’s spiral-rib heat exchanger is said to be a world first. It attains industry-leading heat transfer rates thanks to its unique spiral de- sign, which achieves low stack temperatures by passing the flue gases through a spiral-wound heat exchanger that is fully immersed in water.

he new gas-fired, vertical spiral-rib tubeless steam boiler from Fulton, the VSRT, is the first range to emerge from the company’s new ‘PURE Technology’ approach, an initiative that has resulted in what is being described as a
