Secop
In addition to many biomaterials, new high potency mRNA-based vaccines against COVID-19, Ebola and CGTs require extremely low temperatures at all stages of the supply chain. Flensburg-based Secop GmbH, an established supplier of cooling compressors for the medical sector, has now launched five new products for this “ULT” (Ultra Low Temperatures from -60°C to -86°C) range. The compressors—one for mobile use, four for stationary use, three of which can also be used in the biomedical range from -30°C to -60°C—are part of a product series specifically designed for medical applications, which will be further expanded in the future. They enable manufacturers of cooling solutions to develop devices with high cus tomer benefits.
The advantages for using Secop ULT cooling compressors are that manufacturers of medical cooling solutions benefit from both the robust products and software tools as well as experts to assist them in product development and customization. This makes for a smooth and efficient process in the validation and verification of the refrigeration unit, thus bringing it to market faster.
Secop’s ULT stationary cooling compressors are applicable throughout the global voltage range. They are available for refrigerated containers with volumes from 20 to 200 and from 200 to 500 liters. X

Star Conex Bänninger
Conex Bänninger has extended its Inox fittings range, adding an <A> Press Inox single press option that is available in 316L stainless steel in sizes from 15 to 54mm.
WRAS approved, <A> Press Inox fittings are suitable for a variety of commercial and industrial applications, including drinking water, heating and cooling installations, and rainwater harvesting. They are also suitable for low pressure steam, oil-free compressed air and industrial process water systems.
The new 316L fitting is a low carbon version of the standard 316 grade.
<A> Press products are pressed using ‘M’ profile jaws and carry a 25- year warranty when installed to manufacturer’s guidelines (see terms and conditions).
Installers should check the Conex Bänninger website or manufacturer’s guidelines for which jaws are compatible with which press tool, as it is essential the correct jaws are used when pressing. The fittings are suitable for use with stainless steel tubes to EN 10312 series 1 and 2, and have a maximum operating temperature of up to 110 °C at 16 bar pressure. X

A free energy consumption benchmarking app from Star Refrigeration is now available to the wider industry. The app allows users to benchmark their temperature controlled storage facility’s energy performance against best practice in order to gain an insight into the potential for reduction in energy costs and carbon emissions. This is a key first step in the industry’s transition to net zero. With the COP26 climate conference on the horizon in Glasgow, Star Refrigeration’s birthplace, the company has great ambitions for the app to play an integral role in driving down the sector’s emissions as a whole. It could also assist businesses to understand how they sit against industry standard and ‘UK Best Practice’ and take remedial action in order to qualify for the Climate Change Agreement which provides cold chain business owners with up to 90% reduction on the Climate Change Levy (CCL) currently paid on energy bills. In the app users are required to input refrigeration plant details such as energy consumption, the volume of the facility and the option to enter the price paid per unit of electricity. The calculator then shows how a plant compares against other sites across the UK and Europe and what sort of energy, CO2
emission
and cost savings are possible by improving the energy efficiency of the site.
Cold and chill store owners and operators will compare their energy consumption against the UK’s 1994 and 2019’s ‘Best Practice’ benchmark along with the European standard which represents the averages from approximately 300 sites across Europe in 2013. The current industry ‘Best Practice’ guidelines in the UK were released from research carried out by Dr Andy Pearson, Star Refrigeration’s Group Managing Director. Updated guidelines were long overdue as the previous UK ‘Best Practice’ Guidelines were over 20 years old. For the research, Dr Pearson collated energy performance figures of modern installations in the UK which were carried out by Star Refrigeration. The research revealed that the energy consumption of a modern, well maintained temperature controlled storage facility can now be less than 30% of the generally accepted figure from 25 years ago.
