DATA CENTRES

Operational efficiency vs data security

Real-time, 24/7 water system monitoring ensures HVAC systems remain free of corrosion while extending the life of valuable plant and improving efficiency – essential for critical data centres. The problem lies with data storage, which could leave high-risk sites open to cyber-attack. However, there doesn’t need to be a stand off between HVAC efficiency and data security. Toby Hunt from Guardian Water Treatment explains.

A

s buildings become more connected, so do the services that power them. Building automation systems enable

the built environment to become smarter and more resilient to threats. However, growth in connectivity also means more services are exposed to the internet, increasing the risk of data breaches.

To combat this challenge, building owners and facilities managers of high-risk sites must pay

great attention to HVAC security to enable their sites to benefit from greater efficiencies, better building performance and increased ROI, while ensuring data is secure. Data centres play a central role in most aspects of life – more than most people realise. Society’s reliance on them is ever increasing, bringing a variety of challenges – from storage and infrastructure to cooling power and security, data centres are evolving at a fast pace to

meet growing global demand. The data centre of the future will have more interaction with renewables, a greater reliance on technology and innovation and a mix of complex cooling systems to maintain optimum environmental conditions – all done with fewer people on site. One of the best ways that data centre owners

and facilities managers can achieve this is through remote monitoring technology, which ensures that those responsible have a true picture
