CONDENSERS
accumulation along with other contaminants at a predictable and consistent rate. When the coils get dirty, compressors may need to work harder for longer to produce the same amount of cooling and achieve the required system performance, resulting in compressor life being shortened or, worst-case scenario, catastrophic failure. ■Clogged coils can cause many problems, including: ■Decreased heat transfer ■Decreased cooling capacity ■Increase energy usage ■Corrosion and damage ■Impact other components ■Reduce energy effi ciency ■Shorten the longevity of the system ■Complete unit failure
Energy effi ciencies Dirty condensers and evaporative coils can
hinder effi ciency and have a negative impact on an HVAC system operation. Some estimates indicate that dirty coils can increase the energy consumption of compressors by as much as
expected. This can be a good indicator. A service and maintenance engineer can advise and should be able to indicate how regularly coils should be checked for cleaning and how this will be carried out.
30%. Airfl ow can also be impacted negatively and can reduce heat transfer, compromising the coeffi cient of performance (COP). There is plenty of compelling evidence available to show that routine cleaning can increase energy effi ciency.
Inspections
Visual inspections can readily fl ag the diff erence between a dirty and clean coil. But for a more technical approach, the temperature diff erential can be highlighted by measuring the diff erence between air entering and the air leaving and then comparing it to the temperature diff erential
Cleaning may involve the use of compressed air or water sprays; the removal of biological contaminants may require the use of specifi c and appropriate chemicals. HVAC systems are by design, sophisticated systems comprising many connections, components and moving parts. They should be durable and robust and that includes the condensers. To ensure the good health of an HVAC system, condenser units should never be ignored. Any problems arising can result in building’s not being cooled eff ectively and energy bills rising, the inconvenience and associated costs of downtimes and a shortened lifespan of equipment.
Condenser maintenance is a worthwhile investment; it is also a good environmental practice – contributing to energy conservation, which is good for business and the planet.
