REFRIGERANTS
Collaboration By investing in recovery equipment, cylinders and services, and by partnering with stakeholders in its value chain, A-Gas has been off ering practical and tailor-made approaches to LRM for more than three decades, considering the characteristics of each market and country. “Working with governments and local industry stakeholders to raise awareness about the risks posed by existing banks of refrigerants and their potential impact if left unmanaged is a critical starting point,” Elvira Nigido, group sustainability compliance manager at A-Gas, explains. “Recovered gas is often out of specifi cation due to its use or the way it has been previously managed. Depending on the nature and level of contamination, we have invested heavily in deploying various reclamation technologies.” The eff ectiveness of the Rapid Recovery service
proposed by A-Gas was demonstrated in late 2023 in the UK. The task for A-Gas’ Rapid Recovery Team was a recovery project for a leading international bank based in London, which was successfully completed.
The customer had a large quantity of R134a, an HFC refrigerant with a high Global Warming
Potential (GWP), in nine decommissioned air conditioning systems in its premises’ basement. Using A-Gas’ custom-designed equipment, Rapid Recovery technicians were able to recover all the refrigerant eff ectively and effi ciently, preventing its release into the atmosphere and ensuring that the customer could maintain its business-as-usual operations, avoiding major disruption to the day-to-day activities. Also thanks to the proactive cooperation between A-Gas and all stakeholders, the task was completed on a tight deadline, as planned, providing a fast, on-site and eff ective solution.
With its specially developed mobile technology, Rapid Recovery is a service for the onsite recovery of refrigerant gases for a wide range of sectors, including heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, maritime services, demolition and many others. It off ers personalised solutions that can be adapted to systems of varying dimension, from individual residential air conditioning systems to refrigeration equipment of all sizes and designs. This is also possible thanks to A-Gas’s fl eet of trucks, all equipped with 120 meters of hoses, through which any intervention site can be reached.
Available around the clock, 7 days a week, the service can manage projects at any time, guaranteeing recovery of gases up to 10 times faster than with traditional methods. Every aspect of the process, from the preparation of all documentation in accordance with local regulations, is handled by a team of highly qualifi ed expert technicians who work in collaboration with the client’s personnel. Rapid Recovery is a sustainable procedure
proposed by A-Gas to companies looking to reduce costs and save time, fully complying with regulatory requirements with a view to circular economy and conservation of natural resources. In conclusion, the scale of the opportunity to build a sustainable future is huge: “There is still much scope and potential and there is no shortage of collective work remaining to be done,” Nigido says. “Through our LRM off erings and stakeholder partnerships, we will continue to invest in and expand recovery channels across regions. By maximizing the useful life of refrigerants and limiting the opportunity of release into the atmosphere, we can reduce the risk of serious environmental harm.”
