Advice from the AVA – what you need to know NEWS | Industry Updates


There are a number of pressing issues currently affecting the vending sector and the Vending and Automated Retail Association (AVA) has issued this reminder and some advice for vending businesses.


MEASURING YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT In June last year, the UK


government published a policy note which requires companies bidding for projects over £5 million to provide a carbon reduction plan as part of the bid. Increasingly, AVA members are being asked about their


environmental credentials within tenders, as the government and businesses become more aware and conscious of their environmental impact. It is important that you can provide information about your company carbon footprint, so the AVA has collated some advice on how to do this. Members are advised to get in touch with the AVA for more on this.


PLASTIC PACKAGING TAX Plastic packaging tax (PPT) is an environmental tax designed to provide a financial incentive for businesses to use recycled plastic in the manufacture of plastic packaging. The plastics tax of £200 a tonne on any single use plastic items not containing 30% recycled materials came into force on 1 April this year and applies to any single use item in which the majority weight is plastic – meaning it does not apply to paper cups, but does to plastic cups.


WHO NEEDS TO PAY PPT? • Any business that imports plastic packaging or products containing it into the UK, where the amount imported exceeds a threshold of 10 tonnes within a 12-month period, or


• Any business manufacturing plastic packaging where the amount manufactured exceeds 10 tonnes within a 12-month period. It is clear that many companies are unaware of the implications

CURRENT LEGISLATION At present, there are 59 pieces of legislation that might impact the sector being ‘processed’ and the AVA. As an example, the most immediate pieces of legislation and consultations are:


Scotland:


Single Use Disposable Cups Charge Advisory Group Delivering Scotland’s circular economy Single use plastic items ban


Wales:


Ban sales of energy drinks to Under 16s consultation. It also contains a proposal to extend the ban to other ‘high caffeine’ drinks such as Coffee and Tea.


England, Wales & Northern Ireland: Defra next stage consultation on Extended Producer Responsibility (mandatory cup takeback schemes); Waste consistency and a Deposit Return Scheme – expected September 2022


Republic of Ireland: Legislation now in place for 20c ‘disposable cup’ levy implementation – awaiting next stage for AVA input.


CALORIE LABELLING GUIDELINES There are a number of regulations in the UK that have an impact on the sale of food and drink from vending machines including calorie labelling regulations, promotion of products high in salt, fat and sugar and the regulations on labelling of foods prepacked for direct sale (Natasha’s law). It is important to note that the calorie labelling regulations


that came into force on 6 April 2022, apply to ‘service provider’ companies with more than 250 employees. At present, this does not apply to packaged confectionery, snacks or canned/bottled drinks because they already have the calorie content on the label. While meals sold in vending machines already have to carry calorie content on their label, this new regulation reinforces the need for consumers to read this before purchase. For more on this go to

Drinks such as lemonades, iced tea, cold brew, cocktails, and mocktails were served. “Marco and Beyond the Bean are united in their desire to innovate the beverage experience and resist the ordinary.
