he Vendies’ highest honour—the Lifetime Achievement Award—was presented this year to Richard Brinsley, managing director of Westomatic Vending Services. A


true industry stalwart, Richard received a heartfelt standing ovation from guests, showing just how much respect and admiration he commands. In this short Q&A, Richard shares with Vending International what the award means to him—and reflects on a remarkable journey spanning decades in the vending sector.


What does winning this award mean to you? This award at the Vendies lunch came as a complete surprise to me. It was a great thrill to know that, after more than 50 years, colleagues in the industry felt I should be recognised with this prestigious accolade.


How did you begin your career in the industry? My career began in the early days of Westomatic, selling and operating vending machines in Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, and Dorset. Starting as an operator has meant I’ve always understood the full process of delivering reliable and successful vending and catering systems.


What has been your key to success? I’ve always been passionate about the industry. The opportunity to travel extensively, learn from other manufacturers and markets, and then bring those ideas back to Westomatic for machine design and improvement, has been invaluable.


What is your greatest professional achievement? This award ranks very highly, as it represents recognition from my professional colleagues over the years.


How has the vending industry evolved and how has that impacted your career? In my time at Westomatic, people’s tastes have changed dramatically. There was a time when vending that was simply “warm and wet” was considered adequate.


Today, the industry leads the way in delivering excellent quality drinks, snacks, and food—not just in the workplace, but across all public areas. Because Westomatic is still privately owned and British, we’re able to make quick decisions to stay flexible and meet our customers’ changing needs and expectations. During my career, there have been many highs and a few lows, but thanks to the great team here at Westomatic, we’ve continued to drive the business forward.


What does the future hold for you and Westomatic? These days, I take a few more holidays, but my heart will always remain in the industry. I look forward to continuing to work with our team, friends, and colleagues for many years to come.


Richard Brinsley’s journey in vending began in May 1966, when he joined the family business started by his parents. Nearly 60 years on, he now leads the company as Managing Director, overseeing its growth into a globally recognised name in vending machine manufacturing, supply, and refurbishment. With a reputation for hands-on leadership, Richard has played a key role in driving innovation—many of his ideas have gone on to shape industry norms. His extensive international travel has provided valuable insights into shifting consumer preferences, knowledge he has effectively shared through his role on the Vending & Automated Retail Association board. Under his leadership, the company has marked major milestones: from launching next-generation machines and a bold rebrand to relocating operations and championing sustainability. His work has not gone unnoticed, earning him a string of prestigious industry awards. Away from the business, Richard embraces life with the same energy—whether enjoying a piña colada in the sun, heading out on safari, playing a round of golf, or cheering on the Exeter Chiefs from the stands.
