NEWS | Industry Updates BWCA and EDWCA members to
vote on a single Association On October 10, members of both the British Water Cooler Association (BWCA) and the European Drinking Water Cooler Association (EDWCA) will be invited to vote for their respective Associations to be amalgamated to create a new, combined Association to replace the two separate existing trade bodies. Talks began between members of the two executive councils in
2018. As a result of successful discussions, an outline proposal was put to the combined membership. This proposal was successfully mandated by both Associations in the Autumn of 2018. Since this date a considerable amount of work has been
undertaken with representatives from both Association executive councils collaborating closely together. Both existing Associations will be holding their respective AGMs
on Thursday, October 10, at the same venue, where a final decision to proceed will be voted on. If the majority of members in each organisation vote in favour of an amalgamation, then the first meeting will be held on the same day and a new Association will be formed, with an anticipated launch date of January 2020.
Former VI owner passes away
Former owner of Vending International and an industry stalwart, Neil Hird, has died at the age of 86 following a long illness. Mr Hird was the second owner of Vending International after he acquired the magazine from Ray Pearl who founded the trade title in 1967. After his time on Vending International, Mr Hird assisted the
then Automatic Vending Association of Britain (AVAB), now the Automatic Vending Association (AVA), in the launch of AVEX, the trade show for vending, water and coffee industries across the UK and beyond. Long-time friend and former associate Phil Reynolds said: “He was a gentleman of the old school who was very well liked in the industry. He was a stalwart in vending and will be sorely missed.” Mr Hird, whose expertise was in publishing, continued to work in the field both within vending and on trade titles as varied as The World of Embroidery.
Huhtamaki’s new compostable addition uses 25% less material
Global specialist in food and drink packaging, Huhtamaki, has launched its new compostable Bioware Impresso Double Walled Hot Cup. Adding to Huhtamaki’s existing Bioware compostable range, this new cup in a mixed sleeve of
white and green designs utilises the
Impresso bubble emboss which provides enhanced insulation and a tactile touch for the holder. The new cup is manufactured in the UK, which is seen as good for the environment and for the economy. It utilises sustainable 100% PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) paperboard with a plant-based PLA coating on the inside.
As with all of Huhtamaki’s Impresso’s double wall cups, the design
means the cup uses up to 25% less material than most other smooth walled double and triple wall cups on the market – a game changer for environmentally conscious businesses to reduce the weight of their packaging without compromising on performance. Becci Eplett, marketing manager at Huhtamaki UK explains the cups’ benefits. “We are experts in both cup design and manufacture, and our latest innovation, ‘feel good’ adds a compostable double wall cup to the range with our unique Impresso outer wrap that feels good to hold and provides enhanced insulation. The ‘feel good’ compostable Impresso has EN13432 certification which means that it is compostable in the UK at approved composting facilities.”
