quality. Back in the 1960s it was one of the first companies to bring the dimmer to the UK market. It was Rod Hamilton’s vision to be a quality-driven, pioneering company within the electricals industry.
Overcoming the smart control misconceptions Not one to rest on its laurels, Hamilton had set its sights on the next project – smart controls. It had already developed its own smart lighting and multi-room audio control solutions but there was still a lot of unease and reluctance from installers to expand their business offering into this area. “There has been a misconception in the

everything from a single, reputable manufacturer, then the quality, design and compatibility legwork has already been done. But we didn’t have the products to offer Hamilton solutions to our customers, so we set about expanding our range to become a turnkey solution for domestic wiring needs. With this new direction, Hamilton’s first
product on the development list was consumer units. “The installers we were speaking to wanted a consumer unit they didn’t have to hide, one that basically wasn’t ugly!” says Gavin. “They didn’t want to be confined to installing it in cupboards or under the stairs, so we developed our own range that has a sleek curved design. It’s been really well received, even surpassing our own expectations.” Hamilton’s new Circuit Protection range has

industry that you need programming knowledge to fit smart lighting control but that’s not the case,” insists Gavin Williams, Hamilton’s Marketing Manager. “With plug-and-play solutions, like our own Smart Lighting Control System, installation is simple and affordable. Demand for the latest technology isn’t confined to the wealthy; more middle-income homeowners are asking for smart control options. And when electricians see how easy installation is, it’s a very quick conversion. It’s a fantastic opportunity to expand their business offering.” However, Hamilton knew that this change in

content and driving awareness at trade shows. The Hamilton Smart Lighting Control Challenge was created and ran at the ELEX Roadshow event in Alexandra Palace back in February, and is due to run at the Ricoh Arena and Sandown Park later in the year. “Helping to change the perception of smart
control installation is one of my recent work highlights,” says Gavin. “At ELEX we challenged installers to see how quickly they could wire one dimmer pack and one control plate. Our first winner completed the challenge in a staggering three minutes and 41 seconds; it was incredible! The challenge created a buzz about how easy the solution was to install. We had so many installers watch our demonstrations and request to attend one of our training days to learn more. They can see that this is a low-risk way to expand their business avenues.” The smart lighting control course is one of

The next 50 years “Our customers have always been at the heart of everything we do,” adds Ian Hamilton. “Without our dedicated, brand-loyal clients we wouldn’t have made it to 50 years let alone be preparing for the next 50. As we continue to evolve, to expand our products, to stay ahead of the curve with technology and solutions, we will always put our customer support and education programmes first. Without them, we wouldn’t have this bright future we look forward to.”
