traditional larger products. In fact, smaller appliances with more intelligent controls provide the ideal combination of space-saving, performance boosting and energy-saving capabilities – ideal for the strictly regulated (and financially pressured) social housing sector.

Lot 20 – raising product standards The addition of intelligent controls also leads us onto another key driver for product development, the EU’s Energy Efficiency Directive. From January 2018, all local space heaters manufactured for sale into the EU must comply with a minimum efficiency standard under Lot 20 of the Energy Efficiency Directive – a law which is set to signal the biggest shake up in the electric heating market for decades. Like other product categories, the aim is to rule out inefficient technologies and reduce the energy used in our homes, helping to achieve our overall carbon reduction targets. In simple terms, all local space heaters will have to meet a specified energy efficiency level and for electric heating appliances, the key to driving efficiency of lies in regulating their use through intelligent timers and controls. There are of course a wide range of mechanical and electrical room temperature controls available, with day or week timers, many of which have been available for many years and often purchased as add-ons. These controls will now be integral to new devices, ensuring that they meet the requirements of Lot 20.

By giving end users greater control and lower running costs than ever before, with intelligent controls, the latest products are creating opportunities for your customers.

Like all reputable brands, Dimplex has been

working hard to redesign products to suit the regulations, and your customers should already be switched on to the fact that Lot 20 will raise the standard of entry level products. Dimplex’s intelligent, adaptive controls have

already been proven on models like Q-Rad and Quantum, but by incorporating them across the product range we will be offering innovations such as temperature control with presence detection or open window detection, distance control via an app, and even adaptive start control to suit the requirements of the user. The end result is that installers can give their

customers confidence that they have a better quality product, using smart technologies that can help keep running costs to a minimum –

and comply with the latest legislation of course. All this with a compelling, topical reason to contact old customers and sell them the benefits of upgrading their electric heating system. It’s a win-win situation for all and with so

many opportunities available to installers, the most important thing for wholesalers is to make sure you are armed with the insight and of course the products to take advantage. Work with your manufacturer of choice to understand what impact Lot 20 will have on their product range, and be sure to communicate it back to your customers so they can capitalise.
