EDA publishes new guidance document for electrical wholesale branches

Published by the Electrical Distributors’ Association (EDA) ‘COVID-19 & Social Distancing: Practical Guidance for Electrical Wholesale Branches’ covers every aspect of a typical branch structure giving ideas and advice on how to adapt processes whilst continuing to trade safely during the pandemic.

T

his guidance has been created to provide information for electrical wholesalers in the operation of a typical branch. This guidance is based on the Site Operating Procedures (SOP)

published in April 2020 by the Construction Leadership Council (CLC), which in turn is based on Public Health England (PHE) guidance. Developed by the EDA and a group of expert wholesalers, the guidance

is available to download through the Association’s specially created online Hub, which can be accessed at https://www.eda.org.uk/eda-covid-19-hub/. Margaret Fitzsimons, CEO at the EDA, explained why the guidance was

needed, “The safety of our members’ employees, customers and suppliers is vital and this guidance provides practical suggestions and ideas that can be adapted for branch operations of all sizes and layouts. Our guidance does not replace companies’ existing health and safety procedures, rather it is complementary. “At this stage in the pandemic no one knows how long social distancing will be with us but as a sector we need to plan ahead, and our guidance can help members develop safe yet responsive working practices.” The document includes a daily branch checklist, and guidance on

travelling to work, working in an office environment, driving at work & delivering to construction sites, serving “collect” customers, allowing customers into the sales counter area, receiving supplier deliveries and handwashing, toilet facilities, changing facilities, showers & drying rooms. Where workers enter people’s homes, they should follow the PHE guidance on Tradespeople and working in people’s homes. The HSE is the relevant enforcing authority for PHE guidelines. It should be noted that if a

site is not consistently implementing the measures set out by PHE, it may be subject to enforcement action. The EDA document is for information purposes and should be read in conjunction with any specific company guidance/policy documentation. It is likely that this document will be updated regularly, so please pay special attention to the version and date at the top of the document and every page in the document. Please also visit EDA’s online COVID-19 Hub to find the latest version of this guidance and other resources.
