A safer way to work
David Mattin U
nivolt has spent almost three decades developing its HFT range, a unique cable containment solution designed to offer the ultimate health and safety solution in this niche area of
the construction industry. Key benefits of the range include minimum smoke release in the event of fire, completely halogen- free, flame retardant, chemically resistant, maintenance-free, easy to install and containing insulating properties. David Mattin, managing director of Univolt, explained: “Univolt has always championed a health and safety focused product range, and this is really gathering momentum in recent years. Today’s construction industry and specifiers increasingly prioritises the welfare of its people and the future occupants of our building over cost savings. This is why the HFT range has gathered real momentum in recent years, representing a perfect fit with a wider safety driven specification.” HFT is a registered trademark - the halogen-free materials used for
production don’t contain toxic or corrosive substances, therefore meeting the increased safety requirements of modern applications. Sourcing and processing the most appropriate and advanced raw materials is critical to the design process. HFT systems are ideally suited for installations with an emphasis on the protection of human lives and valuable assets including industrial plants as well as water and treatment plants, transport systems as well as any large expansive open areas where large groups of people can gather such as hospitals, schools, hotels and shopping centres. David continued: “We are seeing more specifications in high risk projects such as ratment plants, however, there has been a natural shift in users opting for HFT in areas which attract large groups or gatherings, such as public sector building or shopping centres. Post Grenfell, we are very aware of the risks surrounding confined areas, particularly in the potential
As we adjust to a changing social and working landscape under conditions imposed as we manage the threat of Covid-19, health and safety must remain a number one priority. Once sites begin to re-open, we must adhere to the strictest of working practices to ensure our workers are not put at risk. Equally we must continue to specify products and materials that comply and exceed where possible all necessary regulations and offer ultimate protection in the event of an incident.
outbreak of fire, therefore, opting for the right materials to provide the ultimate protection is vital.” There are three key products within the HFT range including Low Smoke
Fume (LSF), Low Smoke Fume Zero Halogen (LSFOH) and the Turbo effect. LSF offers higher ignition point of up to 15% than standard PVC; the halogens it contains are released at a slower rate. Smoke release is therefore also reduced by up to 60% in the first four minutes of a fire compared to standard PVC. LSFOH, Low Smoke & Fume Zero Halogen conduits are not only
characterised by the fire- retardant performance but also by the halogen- free properties, thus offering low corrosive and toxic emissions. During a fire, LSFOH conduits will emit less smoke and acid gases, 90% less smoke and zero halogens which may affect human health and damage expensive communications equipment. LSF0H conduits offer the same mechanical resistance against compression and impact forces as steel systems. The Turbo effect is an innovative and patented conduit design that simplifies and enhances the installation process. Inserting cables becomes faster and less strenuous without compromising the characteristics of standard conduits. The sectional corrugation reduces the friction between cable and conduit and helps installers to save time and cost. The Turbo design is a patented feature of installation conduits and has become favoured by installers. Now it is also available for UNIVOLT’s LSF0H series and helps users to save time, effort and money. Compared with conventional conduits the Turbo pro-ducts lead to lower frictional forces, hence shorter installation times for cabling work. David concluded: “We believe that the future of cable containment lies within the HFT range as considered choice gathers pace and together we create safer spaces to work, live and socialise in.”
