Interview
we are consistently delivering high-quality apprenticeships to meet the needs of learners and employers alike. It is also important that we are financially sustainable. The rising costs and complexity of apprenticeship delivery are not being matched by funding increases. It is getting harder and harder to deliver apprenticeships sustainably and we are seeing providers exiting the market in increasing numbers, which is a great concern at a time when demand is increasing.
How is JTL’s work helping to combat the skills shortage in the electrical industry? Each year we take on around 2,000 apprentices to contribute to closing the existing skills gap. As a training provider, we are effectively taking on 30% of individuals starting in the industry, and in terms of output, we are delivering about 33% of all new electrician starts.
What are the main barriers to entering apprenticeships and the workforce? I believe that one of the major barriers to entry for apprenticeships is the lack of understanding around the qualification and how to apply for one. Ask any parent or pupil the route to university and they can all tell you, but ask them about apprenticeships and most don’t know. We

need to make sure that everyone understands the value of an apprenticeship and how to get one. Unfortunately, we have found that the school system isn’t working in favour of apprenticeships, as it pushes most pupils towards university and doesn’t promote the qualification as an alternative route upon completion of GCSEs. Apprenticeships are vital to the economy and, particularly for electricians and plumbers, they lead to very well paid and rewarding jobs. It is important for teachers, pupils and parents to understand how valuable an apprenticeship is and the benefits it can provide, such as avoiding university debt and being able to earn while you learn.
Who has influenced you the most professionally?
I would say that my greatest influencer was actually the first commanding officer I had when I was in the military. He taught me a lot about leadership through the example he set, which has informed my approach throughout my career.
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
I’d certainly say that my three children are my greatest achievement.
What’s your favourite film and/or book? My favourite films would have to be the original Star Wars trilogy, and my favourite book is ‘The Complete Memoirs of George Sherston’ by Siegfried Sassoon.
Football, golf, gardening, pets, children… What keeps you busy at the weekends?
Most of my weekends are spent outdoors in the countryside. I love walking and cycling and every winter I try and find as much time as I can to ski. I also really enjoy cooking – though not baking – and my favourite dish to cook would be a slow- cooked shoulder of lamb.
And finally… what’s your karaoke song?
I can’t say that I have ever done karaoke before, but if I were to, I would probably go for something by Queen. However, no-one needs to hear me sing, so karaoke will always be something other people do!
