EIC Update

Essential supportevery step of the way

By Tessa Ogle, Managing Director of the Electrical Industries Charity

W

hen someone significant passes away, our lives change in the blink of an eye leaving us no time to

rehearse for the roles that are thrust upon us. Grieving for a loved one can place tremendous strain on an individual, but support from the industry can play a vital role in providing strength in the darkest of times and helping them move forward. Every day the Electrical Industries Charity (EIC),

through its Employee and Family Support Programme (EFP), supports dozens of employees and their families who are going through the most heart-breaking moments in their lives. EFP, which is part of the Charity’s Employee

Assistance Programme (EAP), is solely funded by powerLottery, and the funds generated through this go towards helping people in our industry in many different ways. Recently, thanks to support from people like

you who donate to powerLottery every month, EIC was able to support Andrew Simmons, a single father of two, through a bereavement and help him to get back on his feet after the sad loss of his beloved wife, Lizzie. Andrew and Lizzie had been expecting their second child, and after a difficult pregnancy Lizzie was airlifted from Shetland to Aberdeen Hospital in mid-April. Their little girl was subsequently born by caesarean 11 weeks early. Lizzie was doing well until she suddenly fell ill and passed away two weeks later. Following the devastating news, Andrew had

to stay in Aberdeen while his baby girl was in Intensive Care, and his mother cared for their two-year-old little boy. Andrew remained in Aberdeen hospital until his daughter was doing well enough to come home. EIC was able to

offer Andrew an emergency grant of £2,500, which allowed him to concentrate on looking after his family, and for which he was extremely grateful. The death of a loved one is one of life’s most challenging experiences and can lead to feelings of isolation and loneliness. Give your colleagues a shoulder to lean on through the most difficult time in their life by donating £1 per month to powerLottery, or simply becoming a partner of the Employee and Family Support Programme.
