could optimise material usage and utilise the EasyConnect and Uniklip systems efficiently. The Unitrunk systems were supplied by Electric Center in Oxford. To bring the electrical supply into the building
from the HV ring, the CT Walters team installed a switch room on the ground floor of the North wing along with a rooftop plant room in the same area of the building. From the switch room, the core submains cabling was taken through the building via a single riser of Uniklip cable tray for each wing and a central spine of Uniklip down the main corridor of each. The two wings were then connected by dual ‘bridges’ of cable management infrastructure across the central atrium. While perforated steel cable tray is commonplace in hospital installations, the Uniklip system has been designed to provide faster installation and ease of reconfiguration, avoiding the need for installers to cut, screw and tighten components at every stage of an installation, which also reduces the potential for errors and waste. The system is installed by using the perforations in the tray, along with couplers and a push-fit clip. Once in place, the clips hold the tray together securely, with no risk that they will work lose like nuts and bolts can over time. However, if the network needs to be altered, they can be removed to add or divert lengths of tray, re-using the original components. To aid speed of installation further, the
majority of the power networks in the building were specified as modular wiring and installed on Unitrunk Uniklip cable tray, which ensured the cable management infrastructure is robust enough to manage the weight of the modular wiring. As Ben Wood from CT Walters commented:

void in numerous sizes, varying from 600mm pre-galvanised cable tray at the switch room to 100mm tray. The smallest possible size was selected for use in each location to manage the available space in voids that were extremely congested due to the level of mechanical services required by the building.
Space Efficient
A high specification data installation was also required, with more than 500 data outlets across the North and South wings along with Wi-Fi capabilities throughout the building. To accommodate this, CT Walters used
EasyConnect cable basket from Unitrunk. Once again, EasyConnect looks similar to conventional cable basket but has been designed to reduce installation times and provide a robust jointing system, with tool free coupling thanks to an integral coupler, which simply pushes together to form a secure joint. Cabling for the fire alarm system has also been installed on the EasyConnect cable basket, along with a fob-based access control system that is linked to the main hospital building via the BMS. CCTV, with a total of 10 cameras located around the building, has also been installed using EasyConnect cable basket as the cable management system. Finally, EasyConnect cable basket was
used for the cameras and A/V equipment in the simulation/demonstration suites and observation areas. The technological focus in the South wing required extensive Cat 6 cabling to serve IT networks, wireless control systems, cameras and AV equipment. CT Walters installed dividers within the EasyConnect cable basket to separate power and data cabling, reducing the number of runs required and thereby maximising space in the voids while contributing to the reduced installation times.
