harmful radiation, and a lot of work was done to explain to installers and consumers that PIR (passive infra-red) is actually no more harmful than the natural heat emitted by the body. The devices were simply ‘observing’ natural processes, switching on the light for security or courtesy lighting.
How things have changed – these days it can come a surprise when there’s no PIR in a room where you need to switch a light on, and when the primary reason for installing them is to save energy. PIR detectors can pick up on the slightest
movement to detect the presence of people in an area, and their detection fields can be adjusted with remarkable precision. The market has been through the seemingly inevitable cheap-and- cheerful stage, and stockists and installers alike have turned back to branded quality assurance. So, what’s next? All installers can now add
smarter PIR control, with automatic daylight harvesting, to the systems they mount.
