Selecting heat-resistant conduit systems
The right conduit for high-temperature environments protects assets, ensures uptime and supports long-term operational resilience.
H
ere, senior marketing specialist Megan Vitanza shares seven critical factors to consider when evaluating heat-resistant conduit systems.
1. Temperature rating
Not all conduits are equal in terms of heat resistance. Some are designed to handle intermittent spikes, while others can sustain continuous high operating temperatures. Always verify the temperature rating of a conduit system to ensure it meets the requirements.
2. Material selection
The choice of material heavily influences performance. Metallic conduits made from stainless steel and galvanised steel offer durability and excellent heat resistance, though installation can be more demanding.
3. Mechanical strength
Energy and water utilities often operate in environments exposed to vibration, heavy machinery or shifting soils. Conduits must resist crushing, bending and abrasion, especially under high temperatures, where materials can become weakened and compromised.
4. Fire resistance and safety Confirm that conduits are flame-retardant, rated for fire propagation resistance and low- smoke, zero-halogen. This reduces the risk of fire spreading along the conduit system, minimises toxic emissions in the event of fire and ensures compliance with fire safety standards.
5. Chemical and environmental resistance
High temperatures often coincide with exposure to oils, fuels, solvents or water ingress. The best conduit for high-temperature environments also offers robust protection against chemical degradation and environmental wear.
6. Flexibility vs. rigidity
In retrofit or maintenance-heavy projects, flexible conduits facilitate easier installation around corners or in tight spaces. Rigid conduits, on the other hand, excel in long runs and areas where additional protection is required.

7. Installation and maintenance Ease of installation is crucial. Choose between threaded or non-threaded connections, ensure fittings are compatible and consider weight — metallic conduits may need special tools. Systems with quick setup and minimal maintenance reduce downtime.
