Conclusion: A sensor for the future The STHS34PF80 TMOS IR sensor is far more than a standalone component – it represents a platform for innovation across multiple industries. With its exceptional sensitivity, ability to detect both moving and stationary objects, and ultra-low power consumption, it empowers engineers and system designers to rethink how presence and motion detection can be implemented in modern applications.

Unlike conventional sensors that are limited by movement-based detection or constrained by optical requirements, the STHS34PF80 opens the door to new design possibilities. Its MEMS-based TMOS technology eliminates the need for bulky Fresnel lenses, simplifies integration, and enhances detection accuracy – making it ideal for compact, efficient systems.

can detect occupants even when they’re not moving – ensuring comfort and energy efficiency. Industrial automation: Monitoring machinery and workspaces for human presence or overheating components. The sensor’s high sensitivity and digital output make it easy to integrate into industrial control systems. Predictive maintenance: Using the sensor to detect abnormal heat signatures in equipment, helping to predict failures before they occur and reduce downtime. Energy-saving appliances: Enabling intelligent power management in devices like air conditioners, heaters, and smart lighting by detecting when a room is occupied or vacant. Security and surveillance: Enhancing motion detection systems with the ability to sense stationary intruders or to monitor sensitive areas without false positives.

Development support

To support rapid prototyping and evaluation, STMicroelectronics offers the STEVAL-MKI231KA demonstration kit, purpose-built around the STHS34PF80 low- power, high-sensitivity infrared sensor for presence and motion detection. The sensor is mounted on a dedicated PCB and connected via a flat cable to the STEVAL-MKIGIBV5 adapter board, ensuring compatibility with the STEVAL-MKI109D motherboard. For performance testing, the kit also includes a plastic holder fitted with a Fresnel lens (TMOS63-10). The STEVAL-MKIGIBV5 adapter plugs into a standard DIL 24 socket and provides full access to the STHS34PF80’s pinout. It comes pre-configured with the necessary decoupling capacitors on the VDD power supply line, enabling immediate use. The adapter is supported by the STEVAL-MKI109D, which features a high-performance 32-bit microcontroller acting as a bridge between the sensor and a PC. Users can interact with the sensor via the downloadable Unico-GUI or develop custom applications using dedicated software routines.

Additionally, the board is compatible with X-NUCLEO platforms including X-NUCLEO-IKS02A1, and X-NUCLEO- IKS4A1, and is fully supported within the X-CUBE-MEMS1 expansion software package for STM32 microcontrollers, making it a flexible and scalable solution for developers working across a range of embedded platforms.
