Supplement: Power Continues from page 25 This offers the following advantages:

 Cost savings thanks to smaller power supplies while simultaneously protecting against load peaks.

 Increased operational reliability with dynamic load profiles.

 Flexible scalability through modular expansion of buffer capacity. During short-term load peaks – for example, when starting motors or conveyor systems – the buffer module can supply additional current alongside the power supply. This way, overload situations are mitigated without overloading the power supply.

Practical example:

In a conveyor system in the logistics sector, the conveyed goods are regularly stopped and restarted. During the restart, high inrush currents occur briefly. By using a buffer module, a smaller power supply optimised for continuous operation can be selected – the buffer module covers the short-term peaks.

Important notes on system layout:

 The time for recharging the buffer module can take several seconds and must be considered in cyclic applications.

 Buffer modules with electrolytic capacitor technology cannot absorb back-fed energy – this must be dissipated through suitable components in the power supply (e.g. output capacitor).

For applications requiring buffer times in the range of seconds to minutes, buffer modules with double-layer capacitors are used. The UC10.241 and UC10.242 models have energy storage capacities of 6 kWs and 12 kWs, respectively, enabling the

controlled completion of processes – such as returning a robot arm to a safe reference position.

In addition to their high energy density, the UC10 modules offer a range of practical additional functions.  Separated inputs and outputs: Separated inputs and outputs enable the division into buffered and unbuffered load branches – without an additional redundancy diode. However, the separate input and output prevent the buffer current from adding to the output current of the power supply to achieve a higher peak current. The maximum output current is constantly 15 A, and an increase through parallel connection is not intended.

Image 4: Parallel connection of UF series buffer modules to extend buffer time or increase peak current reserves.

 PC mode: For industrial PCs, the buffered output can be kept active for 70 seconds, regardless of the state of the 24 V supply from the power supply. This allows for a controlled reset of the computer, enabling it to restart independently afterward.

 Inhibit mode: The buffer function can be specifically deactivated – for example, this allows a service technician to perform maintenance work on the secondary side.

These powerful buffer modules offer a robust solution for applications with increased energy demands during power outages – especially where a safe system state must be maintained.

For applications requiring bridging times of several minutes to hours – such

as during prolonged power outages or unstable AC availability – capacitor-based systems reach their limits. In such cases, DC- UPS systems with battery storage are used.

Conclusion: The right buffer solution for every application Capacitor-based buffer modules are ideal for short-term bridging and dynamic load profiles.

They prevent unplanned system shutdowns, enable controlled shutdowns during prolonged outages, buffer peak loads for dynamic consumers, and ensure the operation of critical infrastructures even under challenging conditions.
