Q: Have you had any famous customers in your shop? A: Wow, not so many famous customers pass through the mews where our shop is. Although, King Charles came to town on the Steam Railway a couple of weeks ago and I dashed out of the shop to have a glimpse of him walking up the Marketplace (and to check out his footwear – which was very smart!)


I’m sure that if I could have steered him into Champley Shoes he would have left with a pair or two from our stylish men’s range!


Q: How do you think the Government could best help footwear retailers at this difficult time, i.e., lower business rates, rents, VAT etc? A: Quite simply the Government could help retail in general by cutting the VAT – they should base VAT for retail on turnover. After the pandemic the VAT was cut for hospitality but not for all the retail sector unfortunately. So I think some changes are needed.


Q: Do you have any plans for the future? A: Next year is our 20th anniversary so that is something we will be looking forward to. Two decades of running an independent business I think is something worth celebrating! So, our plans for the future are to keep our family business thriving and maybe the next generation will keep Champleys going for another 20 years after that!
