REVIEW: MICAM MILANO

MICAM Milano:

February 2024

Cheryl Taylor, Associate Editor at Footwear Today, sends her report from the show

I

’ve been looking back through my capacious archives of Footwear Today magazine, as I do from time to time. Among my dusty files I managed to find a preview of a ‘new’ edition of a MICAM exhibition, organised by ANCI, in March 2011. Back then, the 2011 MICAM edition preview was entitled: ‘Not only functional, but objects of worship: THE SHOES OF A FASHION WORKSHOP’. The footwear fashion collections dedicated to Autumn/Winter 2011/12 duly appeared on the stage in the halls of Fiera Milano Rho on 6-9 March that year, attended by skilled professionals from around the world.

In line with the previous 2010 edition, which I attended, The MICAM ShoEvent in March 2011 went on to be a success. On show during the four days of work were collections of 1,600 exhibitors, including over 550 overseas exhibitors.

Now, compare this with the current season, there were four events for the 97th edition of MICAM, including MIPEL, THEONEMILANO, and MILANO FASHION&JEWELS, with 2,951 brands dedicated to fashion and accessories exhibiting simultaneously at Fiera Milano Rho on 18-21 February 2024. At MICAM alone there were 923 brands showcasing the latest footwear trends.

The exhibition returned with a big focus on footwear and the latest trends, but also the values of sustainability, innovation, and Italian manufacture – the key theme of MICAM. The event welcomed a total of 40,821 trade visitors, from 150 countries, including Spain, Turkey, Brazil, Germany, and Greece, as well as Japan, China, Kazakhstan, and the UK. My goodness, how MICAM has grown over the years! According to Giovanna Ceolini, President of the Italian Footwear Association: “The quality and success of a trade fair can be measured by two yardsticks: its vocation for generating innovation, and its ability to attract professionals from all over the world. In addition to these two variables, MICAM also offers a focus on sustainability and a great opportunity for professional updating. The February event is not only a sort of annual check-up for the footwear sector, but an unmissable opportunity to preview the trends in a sector worth over €14 billion.”
