Edwin James Group appoints new health, safety and environment director


Edwin James Group has appointed Rollo Wood as group health, safety and environment director.


An experienced HSE professional, Rollo joins from Shell, where he was responsible for the HSE performance of Shell’s global retail service station network, which includes over 45,000 service stations in 80 countries. The new role underlines the Group’s commitment to safety and sustainability. It will help drive the company’s environmental, social and governance (ESG) agenda and further develop the health and safety strategy. Commenting on the appointment, Mark Longley, group corporate services director, said: “Health and safety have always sat at the heart of our business, safety is one of our core values. The appointment of Rollo into this key role will ensure that we can bring together and build on the great work already being done both internally and by supporting our customers to meet their targets.

Preventing a Break-in – non-invasive flowmeters in hygienic applications


Katronic clamp-on, non-invasive ultrasonic flowmeters have been supplied to a major biomedical product manufacturer. Removing the need to compromise the cleanliness of the process by breaking into pipes to fit the meter has helped site engineers to significantly reduce project lead time and costs.


There are many processes where clean operation is imperative, for example foods, fine chemicals and biosciences. Clean-downs and changeovers can take a long time, and so can the paperwork and permissions process that allows new


equipment to be installed. Katronic channel partner and instrumentation specialists WE Instrumentation found that one of their key customers had a real issue gaining permission to instal new flow measurement, with typically six months of investigation and effort before permission would be granted to break into site pipework to install new instruments. The costs of the equipment itself was dwarfed by the costs of the decision-making process and installation, making it very difficult for site engineering staff to propose and implement process improvements in a timely way.


WE Instrumentation’s Martin Adams introduced Katronic clamp-on flowmeters to the site engineers. Katronic’s Matt Bird visited site and demonstrated the equipment by quickly achieving a good flow measurement using a hand-held KATflow 200 portable flowmeter. A key advantage of Katronic equipment is that the ultrasonic core of every meter in the range is the same, so a measurement made with a portable meter absolutely mimics the performance of a fixed flowmeter. Installation is straightforward with Katronic’s unique Audible Positioning Assistant that guarantees accurate sensor positioning. Following the successful demo, an initial order of Katronic fixed systems was purchased, followed with further orders after the first batch had proved to be as successful as the demonstration.

Thorite recently had their com- pressed air expert- ise fully tested by Huddersfield based Agrosmart, manufacturers of fungicides, herbi- cides, and insecti- cides for the agricultural and public health sec- tors.


Agrosmart’s existing compressors were becom- ing unreliable, where they needed to increase pro- duction. Thorite supplied a 30kW HPC ASD60 compressor, allowing Agrosmart to double existing capacity and deliver compressed air in direct pro- portion to demand for maximum energy efficiency, matching Agrosmart's requirements perfectly. Thorite also supplied a new Parker refrigerant dryer, high-efficiency Parker filters and a new EqoFluids compressed air ring main system, where the pipework is designed to maximise flow minimis- ing pressure drop at the point of use.
