FILTRATION & SEPARATION A SWEET SAFETY SOLUTION


Foreign body prevention and detection is an important element of food safety and compliance. As with most bulk powders and grains, metal contamination is a common finding within sugar and poses one of the most problematic factors in food manufacturing, allowing the risk of costly product recalls, process stoppages, and damage to expensive machinery. It’s vitally important to make sure


that raw ingredients are sufficiently protected from contamination. Metal fragments and particles can make their way into raw ingredients in a variety of ways, from farming tools to transportation packaging. Machinery components, utensils and handling equipment can also all pose the risk of foreign bodies entering production. Working with a leading


confectionery company that produce popular, high-quality chocolates available on the high street, Steve Musk Engineering Ltd. assisted the quality team as it sought to bolster its safety processes and enhance its foreign body removal processes. Moving one cubic ton of sugar within any given 24-hour production run, and 30 tons on a month-by- month basis, the confectionary giant prioritises protection against potential hazards that can be present within the production process, particularly those that are found within its raw ingredients. It was important to offer complete safety to the processing stage of production to ensure the high standards of quality and safety are maintained for the brand. As an established provider of


process systems to the confectionery industry, Steve Musk Engineering installed Eclipse Magnetics’ Pneumag


technology to the 30-ton bulk sugar silo in-take and line side, placing a 4- inch Pneumag to the bulk tank intake and further two 3-inch Pneumags on the silo-to-line production twin- stream system. The Pneumag unit removes ferrous


and paramagnetic contamination effectively from pneumatic process lines and contains a double-row, high-intensity magnetic cartridge, secured into its housing by quick- release toggle clamps to make sure even pressure is generated around the silicon-based metal-detectable seal. Gravity fed, the sugar flows over the Rare Earth Neodymium Iron Boron (NdFeb) bars, removing fine-particle contamination just microns in size. Steve Musk of Steve Musk

TREATING STORMWATER


The Eastways project in Witham, Essex, consists of an existing industrial unit that was being upgraded to include the construction of a new food production facility with internal offices, a new site entrance, and a new vehicle turning area. This project needed a drainage strategy suitable for an industrial site, to control surface water runoff and remove pollution. The stormwater runoff from the roofs, roads, car parks


and ground area could not be infiltrated so needed to be stored within the development site for storms up to a 1 in 100-year event, with an additional allowance for climate change. With no nearby watercourse, the stored runoff will then flow off the site into a public sewer. The first drainage design put forward for the site was rejected by Essex County Council because it did not address the requirements for Total Suspended Solids (TSS) and metals removal. A higher level of treatment was required for quickly to keep the project on track. Bell Munro Consulting worked with Hydro International


to find a solution. It was agreed that all site runoff was to be via conventional drainage to a public service water sewer and would include Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDs) in underground storage with limited flows into the public sewer, and in-line control measures to remove pollution from the runoff. Working together they developed an effective and


advanced stormwater treatment solution that was customised to meet site requirements, by combining two 1.2 m Up-Flo Filters and one 1.8 m Downstream Defender. To meet the tight delivery deadline and to keep the project on schedule, the filters and Defender separator were supplied in twin wall plastic chambers. The strength of the twin wall chambers meant that there was no need to back fill with concrete and it also made them lighter and easier to move around on site. The Downstream Defender is an advanced


hydrodynamic vortex separator that captures and retains coarse and fine sediment, oils and floatables from stormwater runoff, in a small footprint. As a compact and low-maintenance stormwater treatment solution, it enables the engineers to deliver effective pollutant removal at a single point in the drainage system. The Up-Flo Filters provide an advanced stormwater


treatment solution that delivers multi-stage, high performance treatment in a small footprint. Each Up-Flo Filter combines sedimentation and screening with fluidised bed filtration to deliver surface water pollution removal. www.hydro-int.com/en-gb
