FEATURE INTERCONNECTION THE RISE OF THE M12 CONNECTOR
Over the last three decades the M12 interconnect system has established itself as the preferred option for harsh environments that need reliable, robust solutions for connectivity. The wide variety of cable types, connector orientations and coding options allows M12 connectors to address a broad range of scenarios and applications. Here Marco Staib, product manager at Provertha presents the company’s latest range of M12 connectors, designed to address the increasing and specific needs of the industry

ince the introduction of the 4-pin versions of the M12 connector,
many more variations and options have become available. These connectors are offered in both straight and right- angled configurations and can now be found in 2-, 4-, 5-, 6- and 8-pin versions with IP67 ratings. IP67 applications often require resistance to corrosion, which can be achieved by using stainless-steel housing. M12 cable connectors with stainless steel (V4A) are specifically designed for the requirements encountered in medical technology, the food industry or in cleanroom environments in industrial and off-shore applications. The M12 for example is available in the following keying/coding options: A-code – 5- and 8-pin - primarily used with sensors and actuators
B-code – 4-pin - Profibus fieldbus connections
D-code – 4-pin - 100MB Ethernet/ IP 4-pin
X-code – 8-pin - 10 Gigabit Ethernet (Cat 6A)

special M12 products address the needs of the railway technology, an environment exposed to influences such as radiation, vibrations or mechanical strains. Robust M12 products ensure the safe date and signal transfer. These products are tested according to DIN EN 61373 for extreme vibration and shock influences. Dedicated M12 products have been
developed particularly for cables with an inflexible outer jacket. These appear, for example, in railway conductors according to the fire protection standard 45545-2. For deployment in harsh, demanding railway applications, the use of plastic materials with HL3 as per EN 45545-2 ensures maximum fire protection. The special design allows an easy connection of the cable shield. The safe shield contacting with a 360° EMI/RFI shielding, a torsion- and vibration-proof strain relief and compact design qualify these connectors for uses with extremely high demands.

cables with the same type of connectors (female/female or male/male). This need can be addressed with a M12 gender changer (Figure 1). The device is available in versions for Industrial Ethernet, Profinet, Device Net/CAN bus and Profibus. It is offered as B, D and A-coded versions (5 and eight poles). The 360° shielding and the fully

cable
connectors allow for a flexible choice of the cable outlet direction. Eight fixed cable outlet options are selectable simply by turning in 450
steps. The cable outlet
position of choice is securely fixed by a turning lock. Initially the new M12 90° cable connectors are introduced in the versions M12-A5, M12-A8, and M12-D. The RF proof full-metal housing and the 3600 EMI/RFI shielded crimp flange/crimp sleeve connection system enables use in railway, industrial and other harsh environments. The crimp system based on a hexagonal crimp also provides functional safety in applications with high requirements regarding cable strain relief and shielding, e.g. in railway systems or in machine tools with fast or rotating movements such as production robots. Some applications need to connect

Industrial Ethernet M12 X-code connectors for high-speed networks
HIGH-SPEED DATA TRANSFER X-coded M12 connectors (figure 2) are ideal for high-speed data networks in industrial automation. The M12 X- coded devices are extremely compact and support the TIA-568 and ISO/IEC- 11801 Cat6A specifications with up to 500MHz, enabling 10Gbps Ethernet systems. Using the X-coded connectors with mating face according to IEC 61076-2-109, complete systems for high speed data transmission with 10Gbps can be built in the M12 format. Compared to D-coded M12 connectors (10/100Mbps) the data transmission speed is increased approximately by factor 100. To support the high data rates, the new M12 X-coded connectors provide a special shielded design reducing crosstalk and signal coupling. All components (female and male variants) fulfil the needs according to Cat6A and are protected according IP67.

shielded housing in addition to the twisted crimp contacts go to ensure interference-free data transfer and excellent EMC. The ability to freely combine male and female connectors in addition to the coding on each connection side permit a high degree of flexibility. Eight different coding positions are possible. Offering two fastening options, the gender changer addresses a wide range of applications. By way of example, it can be fastened in wall ducts using a hexagon M16 nut. Wall mounting is also possible by means of a flange and two anchor points.
