Michelle Winny Editor of Electronics visited ARM’s annual Techcon in San Jose to learn more about the ARM IoT vision of the future and the role it’s ecosystems partners are playing to achieve these goals


ith the goal of continuing to build a global Internet infrastructure,

ARM unveiled its dedicated infrastructure roadmap and a new brand identity, Arm Neoverse, at it’s annual Techcon event in San Jose. Drew Henry, senior vice president and general manager, infrastructure line of business at Arm presented the latest Arm Neoverse-powered products during his key note address saying, “As we move to a world with a trillion connected devices, the traffic pattern is changing, and the sheer magnitude of data is growing significantly. Vast amounts of data will flow into the network from things like high bandwidth video sensors used to collect information, and much of the compute needed to extract and analyse that information will move to the edge, or directly into the device. “At Arm we have focused our

infrastructure business on working with the Neoverse ecosystem to develop, and in many instances invent, the technologies needed for this new world of one trillion edge devices.” The company clearly has it’s focus

centred round the future of IoT as Henry continues: “By designing Arm Neoverse IP on the most cutting-edge process nodes and including infrastructure specific features, we are providing a basis upon which our ecosystem can build products that span the cloud to edge. Starting with the “Ares” platform in 2019, we will deliver 30% per generation performance improvements and we will continue to add features designed for the market.” Highlighting the company’s long-term

commitment, Henry continued: “There is a tremendous amount of invention and innovation that will take place over the next decade to support the new infrastructure. Security will be crucial, which is why Arm Neoverse platforms will be built around a very specific security model that we are championing through our own secure platforms and compliance programs, like Arm ServerReady.” Moving on to ARM ecosystem

partnerships, in an effort to simplify safety certification and secure system architecture for Arm based multi-core designs, Lynx Software Technologies, demonstrated its LynxSecure, Separation Hypervisor at Arm TechCon. This platform is said to “simplify safety certification processes for Arm based designs, providing military-grade security coupled with highly efficient virtualisation to multi-core Arm SoC-based designs.” Lee Cresswell, vice president of global sales at Lynx Software Technologies, explained, “LynxSecure supports mixed criticality development, from bare metal code running alongside full stack Linux, with secured communications capabilities between safely separated applications, allowing the mixing and matching of runtime environments on multi-core Arm-based SoCs. LynxSecure supports functional safety certification through hardware supported system partitioning and is highly secure by design system resource management for real-time multi-core applications. Developers can run safety-critical OSes and applications next to general purpose OSes on a single SoC without compromising the performance, safety or features of either, because LynxSecure 6.0 offers true secure separation and safe partitioning between these different environments and the devices that they use.” Speaking about avenues for designers to

deliver differentiation by offering enhanced designs at the lowest cost in the fastest time possible within IoT, Phil Burr, director, portfolio product management, Arm said: “One avenue for differentiation is “rich embedded processing. “Having listened to the developer community and their request for easy

access to an Arm Linux-capable processor for advanced design, we are expanding our DesignStart program to include Cortex-A5, our lowest-power, most area efficient application processor. DesignStart has opened up Arm CPUs to even more designers with over 3,000 CPU prototyping downloads in the last 12 months alone,” said Burr. Speaking about solving the complexity,

fragmentation and diversity challenges of IoT devices at Techcon, Dipesh Patel, President, IoT Services Group, Arm said, “we are furthering our capabilities to support any device and any cloud by collaborating with Intel to remove IoT scaling barriers. “Through the collaboration, our Pelion

IoT Platform can onboard and manage Intel Architecture (x86)platforms, in addition to Arm-based IoT devices and gateways. The combination of our Pelion Device Management with the Intel Secure Device Onboard (Intel SDO) service allows organisations to manufacture devices without any prior knowledge of end customer-specific onboarding credentials or even which application framework the end user will choose. This enables a more flexible cloud provisioning model and seeds a compatible base of Arm and Intel devices ready for management by the Arm Pelion IoT Platform, with onboarding into any application cloud. This will shift the industry from siloed supply chains to a harmonised framework for the design and sourcing of secure, connectable devices.” Patel continued: “In parallel, we are

also announcing Mbed Linux OS, which builds on our Mbed OS – enabling secure and rapid development and device management of IoT devices based on Cortex-A. Mbed Linux OS is integrated with our Pelion IoT Platform and will open up new classes of IoT devices that are easily managed through the platform. With Mbed Linux OS, Arm is providing a secure foundation that enables our partners and OEMs to focus on building amazing things.”
