NEWS Welcome to the May issue of Electronics Today I

have only been on the magazine since the start of the month, and I am already looking forward to getting to know you as I learn about this fascinating industry. My knowledge of the sector is a work in progress, as I also am the editor of other titles in the Industrial portfolio, namely Converter, Electrical Engineering and Irish Manufacturing magazines.

As I’ve taken over the reins on Electronics Today, I have been welcomed into the sector and thank you for all the nice emails and calls I’ve had.

The magazine ethos has always been to champion the sector, and that will not change under my tenure. In this issue of Electronics Today, we’ve got features on Enclosures, Contract Manufacturing, Displays & Uls, Power, Embedded Tech, Distribution and Artificial Intelligence, and the usual industry news. I hope that you find it informative and interesting; as I find my feet, feel free to drop me a line – my email address is below.

Analog Devices invests €630m in semiconductor R&D and manufacturing in Limerick

Analog Devices Inc. has announced a new €630 million investment at its European regional headquarters in the Raheen Business Park in Limerick, Ireland.

The investment enables

the construction of a new, state-of-the-art, 45,000sq-ft research and development and manufacturing facility.

The new facility will support ADI’s development of next-generation signal processing innovations designed to accelerate the digital transformation of industrial, automotive, healthcare, and other sectors. This investment is expected to grow the company’s employment footprint in the mid-west region of Ireland by 600 new positions, a significant increase to ADI’s current 1,500 employees in Ireland and 3,100 employees in Europe as a whole.

ADI chief executive and chair Vincent Roche said: “This next- generation semiconductor manufacturing facility and expanded R&D team will further extend ADI Limerick’s global influence.”

Agile Analog launches innovative digitally wrapped analog IP subsystems

Agile Analog, the customisable analog IP company, has launched its first range of analog subsystems, covering power management, PVT sensing, and sleep management.

It said these innovative, digitally wrapped subsystems significantly reduce the effort required to integrate multiple analog IPs into any ASIC by allowing the IP to be dropped

straight into a digital design flow and connected via a standard peripheral bus, such as AMBA APB.

The subsystems look just like a normal block of digital IP with the standard interfaces that engineers would expect, making them easy to understand and handle. As a result, time to market, costs and risk are radically reduced.

Initially, the company is introducing three subsystems: agilePMU for power management, agilePVT – PVT sensor, and agileSMU for sleep management.

Chris Morrison, director of product marketing at Agile Analog, said, “I’m delighted to announce our first three subsystems. Customers are always looking for ways to reduce time to market, cost, and risk, and our new, digitally wrapped subsystems do just that.”

Hinkley Point C announces 30,000 new training places

Hinkley Point C has announced 30,000 new training places between now and the power station’s completion, helping local people to join the project as its hits peak construction. Trainees will be able to upgrade their skills and earning potential by joining the work to fit miles of pipes, cables, equipment, and control systems. The opportunities have been made possible by Hinkley Point C’s £24 million investment into education, skills, and employment, including at three new Centres for Excellence in welding, electrical and mechanical skills.

Courses will be available in in-demand skills such as electrical work, welding and steelwork. The training centres will become part of Hinkley Point C’s legacy, available for local and national businesses to enrol their own employees, which will help to strengthen the region’s industrial capability.
