CARS THAT READ DRIVER'S EMOTIONS


A development kit is planned to be released later this year by Renesas Electronics Europe for its R-Car that takes advantage of an artificial sensibility and intelligence technology called “emotion engine”. This technology has been pioneered by cocoro SB Corp., a SoftBank Group company. The new development kit enables cars with the sensibility to read the driver's emotions and optimally respond to the driver’s needs based on their emotional state. The development kit includes


cocoro SB’s emotion engine, which was developed using its sensibility technology to recognise emotional states such as confidence or uncertainty based on the speech of the driver. The car’s response to the driver’s emotional state is displayed by a new


driver-concerning user interface (UI) implemented in the Renesas R-Car system-on-chip (SoC). Since it is possible for the car to understand the driver’s words and emotional state, it can provide the appropriate response that ensures optimal driver safety. As this technology is linked to


artificial intelligence (AI) based machine learning, it is possible for the car to learn from conversations with the driver, enabling it to transform into a car that is capable of providing the best response tothe driver. The driver's emotional state, facial


expression and eyesight direction are key informational indicators that, when combined with the driver's vital signs can improve the car and driver interface, placing drivers closer to the era of self-driving cars. www.renesas.com


ETHERNET SUPPLIED DIRECT TO THE PCB


A new M8 D-coded PCB adaptor that allows Fast Ethernet and PoE (Power over Ethernet) communications to be interfaced directly to a circuit board via an individual miniaturised connector, has been released by Harting. The connector carries power and 100Mbit/s Ethernet straight down to the circuit board in the smallest field applications.


The new device is IP67 protected,


and can also carry the necessary power to small field components via PoE. The fact that it meets the requirements of the PAS IEC 61076- 2-114 standard means it can be combined with the connectors and sockets of various manufacturers.


The new interface challenges the fact components are getting ever


smaller as they follow the trend for miniaturisation in industry. At the same time, smaller and smaller field components need to be able to communicate via the Ethernet.


Traditionally, the vital lifelines of


power and data have been supplied via two separate connections, but the advent of miniaturisation and smaller housings, in particular, has rendered this arrangement a luxury. Today, Power over Ethernet (PoE) is key for supplying both lifelines via a single interface.


With the M8 D-coded interface, a


connector that carries power and 100 Mbit/s Ethernetstraight down to the circuit board in the smallest field applications is now possible .
