CONNECTING WITH COMPONENT COMPANIES
Why Electrica chose Hitaltech to streamline and standardise its components range
E
lectrica - designer, developer and manufacturer of electronic systems -
prides itself on its scope of equipment, ranging from micro-controllers and monitoring systems, to detection kits and more. “Currently, we have completed around 1,600 designs for clients,” says Andy Nield, operations director at Electrica: “We design and manage the process for the customer, working with an eclectic range of clients across multiple sectors, including automotive, amusement and biology sectors.” And yet, in spite of this breadth of distribution, Andy admits that Electrica

struggled to cope with the complications of the “many, many suppliers of connectors” that were offering their services. The need to standardise with one supplier was confirmed: Electrica chose Hitaltech. “We’ve known Hitaltech for many
years,” says Andy: “They know our business. They’re able to offer design and technical support, and are able to assist us in development. They hold stock for us too, increasing our effectiveness as it means that we’re not hunting continually for different suppliers. Working with Hitaltech gives our design guys access to a broad range of board-to-board connectors, which covers about 90 per cent of our needs.”
WORKING WITH A SPECIALIST Electrica made the decision to switch solely to Hitaltech around four years ago. Andy remains confident that the decision was a wise one. “There are tens of thousands of parts and thousands of potential suppliers,” he says: “But we value the fact that they provide a great service and make our lives a lot easier.” “For example, we needed a 10-way connector. But only stocking 11- way connectors, Hitaltech modified

them for us. With an interest in the design process, Hitaltech profiles the components that we’re designing into the electronics, carrying stock forward for when we’re ready to go into production.”
DESIGN IS THE DIFFERENCE What would Andy say to other companies looking for a supplier of connectors? “Our focus is on design - if we do that and get that right, then the manufacturing contract will follow. Everything starts with design, and Hitaltech offers a design service that complements our own, something significant to keep in mind when deciding on which manufacturer you work with.”
