FEATURE INTERCONNECTION

COVERING THE MARKET Smiths Interconnect’s Eclipta range for disposable medical applications

Smiths Interconnect’s disposable receptacle and reusable plug, as part of the Eclipta Connector System

Smiths Interconnect releases their ultra-reliable, cost-effective Eclipta Connector System, an innovative solution for disposable medical applications

S

miths Interconnect has released its latest Eclipta series. This high performance edge card technology for disposable medical applications has a range of features that allow for quick and reliable connections for a broad range of critical medical devices. The easy assembly and high density

interconnect design make it suitable for use with ablation catheters, RF generators, home healthcare devices, value medical systems and many other disposable medical devices. For electrophysiology catheter applications, these connectors bridge the gap between the catheter and the extension cable. A standout feature of Eclipta is the fact that the PCB acts as the contact in the connector. Since the board is often part of the disposable device, it eliminates the cost of the contact system on that side. In addition, its plug and play design provides easier termination and virtually eliminates the

potential contact damage associated with the termination process. An added benefit to incorporating the board inside the connector is the ability to add active surface mount components, such as an EEPROM to either side of the board. Eclipta solutions have a storage/ processing temperature range from -40 to 135 degrees Celsius, which allows for use with standard sterilisation protocols (Autoclave, EtO, & Sterrad). The high mating lifecycle life of up to 2500 cycles increases the MTBF (mean time between failures) and the fingerproof contacts on the reusable side contribute to the safety of patients and medical personnel. Eclipta has been developed to deliver benefits to healthcare providers while addressing their real-world manufacturing process needs, as its component design facilitates easy assembly and increased assembly labour efficiency. Additional benefits include mass termination of catheter

wires directly to the PCB in the disposable and reusable sides, scalability, customisation and the possibility to be re-worked on the reusable side. “Smiths Interconnect is committed to bringing the best-in-class interconnect solutions to the worldwide medical community”, says Paul Harris, VP sales and marketing, Smith Interconnect: “We consider ourselves an all-round business partner to our customers, much more than just a supplier. This operating principle is what differentiates us in the marketplace. Eclipta is an innovative and truly cost-effective interconnect solution for disposable medical applications that delivers a competitive edge to customers, whilst also protecting their technology investments.”

CONNECTIVITY SOLUTIONS FOR THE NEEDS OF THE IOT WORLD H

arting now supplies printed circuit board sockets on rolls, in which device sockets are accommodated in a way that is compatible for use with pick and place equipment. Subsequent handling of the interfaces

on the devices is also geared towards performance. Cutting assembly time, while simultaneously simplifying and improving operation, is one of the indispensable cornerstones of a modern interface. The PushPull locking technique represents a very significant aspect here, since previous interlocks, such as screw technology, are no longer adequate for ever shrinking connections. As a result, the handling aspect of connectivity is assuming increasing importance. Harting PushPull technology increases operating safety and efficiency during use. In order to also make the power-supply component of devices simultaneously smaller yet more powerful, the company is enhancing its M12 Power series by adding the standardised K coding for power supply use: interconnection and IoT marry for an effective solution.
