A versatile dual-function sensor designed to transform surface and contour analysis as well as code and character reading in industrial applications, has been launched by ifm electronic.


The O2U5 vision sensor is said to offer unparalleled inspection capabilities by integrating two sensors into one device. This advanced 2D vision sensor allows for the simultaneous analysis of surfaces and contours, along with reading QR codes and characters. This dual functionality ensures comprehensive quality control during production and final assembly processes.


The sensor features multiple interfaces, including IO-Link, and its intuitive software, equipped with application wizards and detachable memory, simplifies operation and configuration. This helps to minimise setup time. Various illumination options are available, including red light, RGBW, and infrared light. Paired with different lens types such as standard, wide-angle, and telephoto, the O2U5 provides unparalleled flexibility in diverse industrial environments, the company explains.


Enhanced quality assurance processes are


facilitated by the O2U5’s capability to perform detailed surface inspections and precise code analysis. For example, it can validate component conformity using QR codes while simultaneously conducting final quality checks on the component’s surface and contours.

MONITORING REMOTE FARM ASSETS WITH WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORKS


NeoCortec is working with Australian company farmIT to enable easy monitoring of remote Australian farm assets such as livestock water troughs, boundary gates, water tanks, diesel tanks, rainfall, soil temperature, and more. According to the company,


its ultra-low power, scalable and easy-to-install wireless mesh network technology dramatically simplifies installation and reduces operational costs for farmers. “The labour-intensive


process of manually checking livestock water supplies and other farm assets can be prohibitively expensive.


NeoMesh presents a low-power, cost-effective solution perfect for the scale of Australian farms,” explained Luke Mitchell, CEO of farmIT. farmIT’s system uses NeoCortec’s long-range radio modules integrated with


sensors on each watering point, efficiently channelling data to a central hub. This data is then transmitted to the cloud via an existing internet connection, eliminating the need for any costly communication network. The sensors operate on just two AA batteries for up to five years and the mesh network means that the distance covered is effectively unlimited. With the long-range-radio modules, farmIT is able to get a range of up to 5km when there is a clear line of sight. If, however, the range to the next node is not enough, a relay station is simply put in the middle to extend the range. farmIT’s sensor solutions not only monitor


livestock water troughs, but also boundary gates, water tanks, diesel tanks, rainfall, soil temperature, etc.

SENSOR RANGE SUITS A VARIETY OF APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS


Honeywell’s VRS series sensors are designed to meet industrial high output/resolution/temperature and hazardous location requirements, as well as general purpose requirements. There are six application- specific series available from stock from Powell Electronics. General purpose VRS sensors are for applications with medium


to high speeds or in electrically noisy environments with relatively small air gaps, the company explains. These are available in housing diameters: 5/8 in (M16), 3/8 in (M12), 1/4 in (M8) and 10/32in. Output voltages are 8 Vp-p up to 40 Vp-p. Hazardous location VRS sensors are designed for use in


locations where explosion-proof or intrinsically safe sensors are required. These are available for housing diameters 3/4in and 5/8in (M16). Output voltages are 30 Vp-p up to 60 Vp-p. For applications where higher output voltages are needed, the high output VRS sensors can be used. These perform best at low to medium speeds with medium to high impedance loads. Sealed front-end versions are available for use where the sensor is exposed to fluids, lubricants or adverse environmental conditions. High resolution VRS sensors


are designed for use in applications where precise timing pulse is required, and/or fine pitch gears are used. Proper alignment of the sensor is required. The sensors are available for housing diameters 5/8 in (M16) and 3/8 in (M12). Output voltages are 17 Vp-p up to 170 Vp-p. High temperature VRS sensors are for where the sensor is


exposed to temperatures up to 260˚C. Sealed front-end versions are available for applications where the sensor is exposed to fluids, lubricants or adverse environmental conditions. Power output VRS sensors are designed for driving low


resistance loads at large air gaps in applications where larger actuators may be used. The products are available with a housing diameter of 5/8 in (M16) and an output voltage of 70 Vp-p.
