SENSORS & SENSING SYSTEMS

FEATURE The compact TM18

optical sensor can be used for monitoring material flow

ROBUST SENSOR SOLUTIONS

From material flow monitoring on a combine harvester to collision protection on

reach stackers, Turck Banner offers sensors designed to meet application demands

S

ensors that are capable of withstanding the environmental conditions of the application are essential. For monitoring

the material flow on a combine harvester, for example, the compact TM18 optical sensor from Turck Banners suits the demands, while being easily installed in the smallest of spaces. After the chaff is separated from the wheat, a

bucket elevator (or a spiral conveyor) transports the grain to the grain tank. During this process, a light barrier checks the flow of material in the elevator. When cylindrical light barriers are used, complex solutions involving deflection mirrors must be designed for this purpose. Banner Engineering’s TM18 offers a light barrier that can be mounted easily onto both sides of the grain chute thanks to its compact design. The robust light barrier provides an EMC strength of 200 V/m for protection against interference caused by radiation, and can be used at temperatures of +90˚C.

SENSORS FOR FIELD SPRAYERS In another agricultural application, with their high shock and vibration resistance, contactless rotary encoders from Turck Banner increase the reliability of field sprayers. When applying crop protection agents, the

spray arms of field sprayers must always be at the correct angle. In order to be able to move the spray arms dynamically and trouble- free, angle sensors permanently measure the opening angles when folding out. Since the

field can only be sprayed over a short period of time, constant machine availability is particularly important. The RI360P1-QR20 contactless rotary

encoders operate completely wear-free, the company explains. Due to the distance between sensor and positioning element, exact angle detection is guaranteed to be fail-safe, even under high shock and vibration loads. Offering high EMC immunity and protection against conducted interference, the devices are protected against salt spray, rapid temperature changes as well as diesel and kerosene. Thanks to the magnet-free inductive mode

of operation, the IP68/69K encoder can also be mounted inside the metal housing of the steering axle, enabling the machine operator to perform a controlled and precise turning manoeuvre in the field.

COLLISION PROTECTION Moving away from agriculture and sensors are also used for collision protection on reach stackers. In large ports and other

transhipment points, containers have to be transferred from one means of transport to the next in a short space of time. Despite the time pressure, however, both the goods and the lifting and loading equipment must be protected – too often, lifting equipment collides

with containers and is damaged. Turck Banner’s ultrasonic sensors – type RU300U-M30E – help to protect the gripping devices of the reach stacker. When the gripper approaches the container, the sensor detects the container. With its 3m range, the sensor secures the minimum distance with two independent switching ranges and reduces the approach speed below a specified threshold value to a safe level. This enables the driver to grip and load containers quickly and safely. Housed in metal, the robust sensor is

ideally suited for outdoor use. The sensor withstands shocks of up to 100g, as well as moisture and salty air. Furthermore, the setting is very simple – either via two teach buttons for each switching range on the housing or by presetting via the teach line.

FINDING THE RIGHT SOLUTION So if you’re in need of a sensor for a specific application, the experts at Turck Banner are available to help you find the ideal solution.
