technology: new igus material creates greater design Freedom

New material with 40% less friction is said to achieve the best design factor for guide bearings of 3:1: drylin T miniature guide with new iglidur E3 material

I

f you need to maximise the service life of a linear guide and keep the required drive energy low, it is important to reduce friction and wear as much as possible. Motion plastics specialist igus has achieved a

breakthrough in tribological plastics: iglidur E3, a new sliding material that has an improved coefficient of friction of up to 40%, extending the design ratio in linear technology for users from 2:1 rule up to 3:1 for the first time. The drylin T miniature slide offers extremely smooth running and new

opportunities in design, thanks to the recently developed material iglidur E3. Depending on the operating point, iglidur E3 has friction coefficients of around 0.16 and so achieves up to 40% less friction compared with the standard igus materials, measured on hard anodised aluminium, and even less compared to commercially available sliding materials. Easy operation is the result, where manual adjustments require 40% lower displacement forces. “This is an important step towards creating more design freedom,

because for the first time we are enabling a significant expansion of the design scope,” explains Lee Wilkins, product manager of drylin Linear Technology at igus UK. The classic 2:1 rule, that generally applies to linear plain bearings, states that the distance of the driving force to the fixed bearing should not be more than twice the bearing distance. Otherwise, there may be an uneven movement or even blocking of the system. igus has now been able to extend this design rule to 3:1, so that the drive

can be 50% further away without impairing the movement of the linear guide. Simultaneously, the required drive forces are reduced by 40%, therefore also saving 40% of energy in electrically driven applications.

Slide Smoother – without environmentally harmful lubricantS The miniature linear slide with the new sliders, made of iglidur E3, offers the well-known advantages of igus motion plastics. Using high- performance plastics enables silent operation, offers high dirt resistance and is also 100% maintenance-free. With new material design, and processing as well as countless tests in its test laboratory, igus has further shifted the application requirements of motion plastics and created new design freedom in linear technology.
