compact and precise stepper drive With the P80630-SDN stepper drive from Kollmorgen, customers can now benefit from features such as smoothness, precision and torque across the full speed range in a compact package that enables smaller, lighter, more versatile machines. The new stepper drive powers and

controls stepper motors operating on 24 to 75 VDC with up to 5.5 Arms current per phase (7.8 Arms peak). Building on the success of previous

Kollmorgen drives, such as the 6410 and P70530, the P80630-SDN drive delivers improved positional accuracy as demonstrated in laboratory tests using PMX series stepper motors. This powerful new drive achieves 10% greater output current in a 60% smaller package that is up to 34mm shorter in height than the 6410, depending on the model. Moreover, it reduces setup time by delivering smooth, precise performance at all speeds without the need for electronic damping control switches.

The drive supports conventional single-ended or differential step and direction interfaces (user- provided pulse train required) or CW/CCW command inputs. Dip-switch selectable settings include motor phase current, idle current reduction and step resolution up to 1/128 microstep, all with no programming required. Dedicated enable input and fault output provide control of the drive's power stage and error monitoring. Applications for the new drive include labellers,

indexing tables, CNC machines,

packaging systems, pumps and other single-or multi-axis systems requiring low-speed, point- to-point motion control for fixed loads.

high efficiency motors for a desalination plant

WEG has supplied W22 motors with IE3 efficiency to a desalination plant in the north of Chile, where motors need to be highly durable while capable of operating in severe conditions. To guarantee that the water reaches the different supply

points, the motors are used in the water feeding and recirculation processes of the plant. Vertical application motors were also supplied for the plant’s capture system.

The W22 range of three-phase induction motors are designed to offer not only significantly

lower energy consumption, but lower noise and vibration, higher reliability, easier maintenance and lower cost of ownership. These also reduce energy consumption, are cost effective, and enable greater productivity, the company explains. Built for the most severe operating conditions, such as operation in marine and saline

environments, the mechanical design of the motors not only optimises characteristics such as weight and length, but also adds durability and easy maintenance to the product in remote regions. The IE3 efficiency level guarantees reduced energy consumption and increased productivity. In

addition, all the motors were manufactured with a special epoxy painting plan for performance in severe marine environments with a high salt index.

applications, the basis is a gear unit from the MAXXDRIVE industrial gear unit series. These gear units, which are principally installed in one-piece UNICASE housings, are available in eleven sizes with torques of up to 282,000 Nm. For the bulk material industry, NORD

developed the MAXXDRIVE-XT industrial gear unit. The power and speed ranges of the application-optimised two-stage right-angle gear units have been designed for applications requiring low speed ratios in combination with high powers. Its robust design makes the MAXXDRIVE-XT resistant to dirt and reliable in rough operating conditions.

Although variable speed drives already offer users substantial power savings, motor drive manufacturers are improving the performance of their devices still further by introducing faster switching capabilities. These allow motor drives to use smaller capacitors and magnetic components, saving space and weight. One such company is KEB Automation, which is

using Yokogawa’s WT5000 Precision Power analyser to develop the latest generation of frequency converters for variable speed drives, ensuring they meet the latest EU energy efficiency regulations. The company’s

latest challenge is to meet the requirements of the EU’s Ecodesign

Directive, which introduces tough new regulations governing the energy efficiency of drives and automation equipment. However, faster switching makes it harder to get accurate measurements of key power parameters such as voltage and current because of the higher level of common mode noise present. Very accurate power measurements are required if motor drive manufacturers are to fine-tune their systems and maximise the efficiency of their designs. David Kater, development engineer at KEB, said:

“Fast-switching semiconductors generate common- mode voltages at high frequencies, inducing parasitic common-mode currents even in small capacitances. We only want to see the differential mode in the measurement, which is why common- mode rejection is extremely important.” KEB uses power analysers at several stages of a

product’s lifecycle, including in the development of the design, for final validation of the design’s performance and also to prove the characteristics of production units. Developing frequency converters for drives requires analysers that can maintain accurate measurements of power parameters. The Yokogawa WT5000 met the requirements.

Its power measurements are accurate to 0.01% (reading) and 0.02% (range) at AC mains frequency (50/60 Hz). In addition, it offers reliability and versatility. With the capabilities of the WT5000, KEB can

design the next generation of highly efficient motor drives, with their engineers able to rely on the test equipment to get the results they need.

customised drives for bulk handling

A considerable amount of the goods transported on road, water and rail is bulk material – sand, coal, grain or sugar, etc. With such a diverse range of materials, NORD DRIVESYSTEMS offers suitable drives for belt conveyors, bucket elevators and other transport systems, with its portfolio comprising highly robust systems for applications in harsh environmental conditions, as well as explosion-protected and particularly hygienic drive systems. To tailor systems for all applications, the

industry experts use the comprehensive NORD modular system. It comprises components such as frequency inverters, motors, gear units, couplings and brakes, as well as fans, base frames and back stops, which are individually matched. For many
