ADVANCED DESIGN AND SIMULATION SOFTWARE HELPS TO SPEED DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW SUPERSONIC AIRCRAFT
Aerion Supersonic’s AS2 is the first privately built supersonic commercial aircraft. Not only is this the first supersonic aircraft with the ability to accept 100% synthetic fuel, but it is also the first to be designed without an afterburner. The company is using Siemens’ Xcelerator
portfolio of advanced design and simulation software to speed development of the aircraft, as well as to achieve superior levels of performance in flight and excellence in operations. “We see Siemens as a critical partner with a fully-aligned solution to our business needs,”
said Tom Vice, CEO at Aerion. “Siemens’ solution portfolio and the strong digital thread connecting each part of our process can help Aerion quickly analyse and optimise innovative designs. We can even model design change impacts on the future carbon footprint of our aircraft, which is critical to our mission of sustainable design.” Barry Chapman, vice president of Aerospace
& Defence and Federal Government, Siemens Digital Industries Software, added: “Siemens is proud to have been selected to support Aerion’s
EPLAN LAUNCHES VERSION 2.9 OF ITS CAE SOFTWARE PLATFORM
Version 2.9 of EPLAN’s computer aided engineering (CAE) platform is now available. The new version brings important improvements including QR codes that can store hyperlinks, a layer management feature that ensures all changes are saved automatically, and much more. Projects can be completed faster with mass editing of project data using expanded navigators complemented by the option to re-use previously developed macros. Another feature of the new version of the EPLAN Platform is that
exchanging symbols in placeholder objects has been simplified; and Layers Management has been made even easier thanks to a dockable dialogue feature and automatic saving of changes. Another improvement is easier project searchability within layers and subprojects. Designers working with EPLAN software can use the properties dialogue for an object found in the search results list to change the assignment of the layer. The list view of the Macro Navigators has been expanded to include additional navigators such as the Parts Navigator, PLC Navigator and Wire Navigator. Once a macro project is completed, standardised macros can be inserted into other projects from the Macro Navigator, using drag and drop. In addition to the new Management dialogue feature, multilingual entries can be made for many properties and input fields in both projects and parts management.
I
wrote my Comment a few days before we were due to go to print
but here I am, re-writing it as things have escalated so quickly. In my first comment I discussed the fact that even back in February at the Southern Manufacturing
exhibition, companies were already feeling the impact of the coronavirus in China, with component orders being delayed by weeks and manufacturing timeframes growing. Despite this, however, the effect on the economy was barely mentioned in the news. How things have changed... Some media outlets are now reporting
that this could, potentially, have as a big an impact on the UK economy (not to mention the world) as the Second World War. We’re at the point where schools are being shut, it looks like London is set to face total lockdown, travel is being restricted, and people are being encouraged to work from home. But how many people in the UK manufacturing and engineering industry will actually be able to do this? And while the Government is now asking companies to help manufacture medical equipment – it’s possible that 20,000 ventilators will be needed – is this realistic? Ventilators are critical pieces of equipment that need to be manufactured by specialist companies who are aware of all the standards and regulations. And, with so many countries on lockdown, will components and
products be available in time? Now is the time to source UK manufactured parts wherever possible. We are all in unchartered territory now. So, to all our readers and
advertisers, please stay safe... Rachael Morling - Editor

drive to revolutionise the commercial aerospace industry and defence market. Leveraging the proven Xcelerator portfolio can help Aerion operate as an agile, digital, organisation and dramatically reduce the time and cost of new aircraft systems development. Siemens is partnering with a range of companies like Aerion, across the aerospace industry, to help create an open and adaptable digital thread across the entire lifecycle, which will be key in meeting defence requirements.”
